When did your cute little mind realize that western games didn't do it for you anymore?
They never did anything for me at all
I like both western and eastern games. I just dislike the western games that focus on gruff tough guys and manly women to try and appeal to 12 year old kids. So I dislike GTA, but liked Red Dead Redemption.
Eastern games tend to have more variety in design. And aren't afraid of having cute girls and fantasy situations while also having western themes and settings.

I've avoided most western games when it became clear their devs only see gameplay as a way to proceed to the next setpiece or cutscenes. Even boss battles get this treatment.

To be fair, some Japanese series do this too. Final Fantasy basically set the standard which western RPG developers now use. Not to mention some Japanese series like Zelda and MGS.
But thankfully, there's plenty of other eastern series that don't follow this cinematic trend.

Games like Final Fantasy VII and X were highly successful. Proving you could have 75% of your game focused on cinematics and dialogue and not only sell well, but break sales records. This set the stage for western devs like Bioware, Blizzard and Bethesda to focus so much on cinematics and dialogue that the gameplay is almost non existent. Yet they also broke sales records.

I like western games, I just don't like modern western games. Most AAA shit is more like movies than games, and most indie shit is pixel-graphics shovelware, often with a hefty dose of 2deep4u.
Japan still remembers that games are supposed to be just games.

There's exceptions on both sides of the pond. Its just sturgeon's law at work.
But you're right about most AAA games being bad. That's what happens when a committee of board members has creative control over a game rather than the actual development team.
