is this the 'The Room' of video games?
What was The Room based off?
Deadly Premonition is fantastic beneath all the clunkiness and shoestring budget; The Room is just bad.
YOU'RE TEARING ME APART OP!
Sort of.
I wish I could go live in Greenvale, place is so comfy

I agree on the first part and disagree on the second one.
DP is a legitimate good game scratching an it that would have been great with a better budget.
The Room is an unintentionally great movie.

No its the Twin Peaks of videogames obviously.
Its literally the twin peaks of vidya

DP is not "fantastic", it's just a little quirky which I guess goes a long way in the stale world of video games. Sure made Tim Schafer's career.
The gameplay itself is awful. The only real gameplay there is in the game is QTEs and really poorly made TPS sequences and those are only in the game because the publishers forced it the devs. Why did the publisher do this? Because when they looked at what was being developed they realized it wasn't a fucking game, it was just a "walking simulator".
*whistle the whole time being comfy*

More like Fire, walk with me.

Twin Peaks completely changed television forever. Just because a game ripped it off doesn't make it the Twin Peaks of video games
>>333182119
>Twin Peaks completely changed television forever.
No. No it didn't.
The Room was garbage.
so yes, it is

Are you some 19 year old who watched twin peaks and blue velvet on netflix and now think Lynch is the greatest director who ever lived?
Can you repeat the question?
>>333181507
It was gonna be an adventure game in the vein of clock tower. But instead they were forced to have combat.
>>333182186
>Twin Peaks influenced The Sopranos and The X-Files
>both Mad Men and Breaking Bad creators and show runners began their careers in those shows

Twin Peaks had little influence on The X Files. Kolchak was the reason The X Files exists.
what's the point of playing when you have this

Probably the original Resident Evil desu.
is this game scary? I want to try it but I'm a pussy when it comes to horror games. I just want to see what all the fuss is about.
>>333180182
No, The Room is just a travesty, but DP is genuinely charming at points.
>this game would have been great if only it was better
kik
>>333183320
It's a little scary i guess? The enemies are kinda The Ring style.
Maybe watch the first level in Supergreatfriends LP, and if you can stand that you're golden.
>>333183140
From Wikipedia on X-Files:
"The early 1990s series Twin Peaks was a major influence on the show's dark atmosphere and its often surreal blend of drama and irony. Duchovny had appeared as a cross-dressing DEA agent in Twin Peaks and the Mulder character was seen as a parallel to that show's FBI Agent Dale Cooper."
>>333183467
it would be great if you could play the fucking thing without it crashing
What system do you get this game for if you want the least amount of jank?
>>333183320
It's disturbing and depressing but not scary.
>I just want to see what all the fuss is about.
Don't play it, watch an LP. Seriously.
Between the huge technical issues and dull gameplay it's really not a fun game to actually play, the only enjoyment to get out of it is the story.
>all these plebs trashing The Room
It was unintentionally good for sure, but The Room is a great movie.
>>333183140
>series is about an FBI agent struggling with a super natural case
>David Duchovny shows up as a fucking FBI agent

This
i wanted to like it,
but i DOESN'T FUCKING WORK
and even when it does work, the gameplay stinks
cars control like shoe boxes with one wheel
the agent runs at the speed of smell
shooting segments are just bad
QTE's are bottom of the barrel
it's a shame
it would have made a great adventure game if not for the tacked on combat
>>333183620
>citation link leads to just some guy saying it in an article
>From the same wikipedia page "The X-Files was inspired by series which featured elements of suspense and speculative fiction, including Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, Tales from the Darkside, and especially Kolchak: The Night Stalker."
Chris Carter has specifically said Kolchak was his major inspiration for The X Files.
>>333183791
Kolchak was literally the x-files but instead of an FBI agent the main char was an investigative journalist.
>>333183741

PC version is a fucking mess, and the PS3 version is subpar.
We /tv/ now?
>>333180182
It's the Trout Mask Replica of video games.
>>333183320
Not really. It's camp horror if it's horror at all.
Even if the enemies are kind of creepy, it's hard to get spooked when the protagonist is going "GREAT. YES! AMAZING. NICE SHOT." every time you get a head shot.
That's not to say that the game lacks atmosphere, though. It's just kind of surreal rather than horrific. Everything is fucked up and twisted, but nobody reacts to it as you would expect them to.There's a plot reason for that, though.
>>333184080
>>333184092
I don't think that Twin Peaks was the biggest influence by any means, but you have to admit there is some.
Less from a direct premise, but more from a direction and mood.
>>333184179
Thanks anon.
>>333184205
>that hair
Unf
>>333184421
Not really, no. I think there is a very distinct tonal difference between the two shows and the production design also had little in common.
To find similarities between the two shows people seem to really reach for superficial connections, e.g. David Duchovny appeared in both shows, there is wilderness in Twin Peaks and occasionally an X Files episode was set in the wilderness, both have supernatural elements, etc.
>>333182358
Can you repeat the question?
Deadly premonition has a better plot than most triple A games. It spend time developing characters in ways that very few games have matched.
>>333180825
>The Room is an unintentionally great movie
>unintentionally
Anon I'm pretty sure they wanted to make a great movie with $6 million. No one intends to make a bad movie.
>>333183320
It's not really that scary.Unless you're out in town past sundown.
>>333184269
This.
>>333184281
>It's just kind of surreal rather than horrific. Everything is fucked up and twisted, but nobody reacts to it as you would expect them to.
This is the best part. The game is a totally fucked up world, and the protagonist is totally insane, but nobody seems to notice, care, or even mind.
>a sinner's sandwich
>>333182482
not him, but I'm a 24 year old who appreciates how games like Deadly Premonition and Life is Strange are influenced by a lot of good media like that. Twink Peaks has been my favorite TV show since I watched it in highschool, and I've watched a lot of good TV shows. And in my top 10 films I can tell you that Blue Velvet, Inland Empire, and Lost Highway are there. Lynch is not the "greatest director who ever lived", but he has created some good shit. Don't try to personally attack someone like that just because you don't like his movies and think Lynch is a hack.
Is Twin Peaks worth watching?
>>333186261
Fuck yes, Season 1 is great all around, Season 2 has a bunch of boring filler, but once you get to the last 3 episodes...

>>333180914
Isn't that Alan Wake?
>>333187246
Alan Wake is the Stephen King of videogames.
Although a location in that game, Mirror Peak, is a very blatant reference to Twin Peaks. That, and several of the characters, such as Cynthia Weaver. The parallels between her and a certain character in Twin Peaks should be quite obvious.
>>333182786
Compatibility mode-windows 95
There, the game is fixed. You useless faggot
>>333187602
that also causes the game to run at 480p and 12 fps
It's more like the Southland Tales of video games. It does many things wrong, some of them embarassingly so. But there's a certain glimpse of greatness there.
What is the Silent Hill 2 of film/TV?

>>333183320I stopped after I passed the factory level because when it comes to horror games I really am a massive pussyIf you're not as big a pussy as I am it's only going to be slightly unnerving and spooky, but there are some spooky levels which I particulary found annoying (see: Hospital)Other than that the game is dirt cheap so you might as well buy it and play for the fuck of it
