So, at the moment it seems that everybody's bitching at Oculus Rift, and praising HTC Vive. When do you fags think that will change, or will it just not change?
Right after launch or something?
>>
>>333165763
Technical issues aside, Oculus installs a service that runs 24/7 on your PC regardless if the headset is connected and sends data to Facebook. Can't say I'm a big fan of Vive, but I hope they can avoid such bullshit.
>>
>>333165939
I'm not sure if they can really. I'm sure that aside from breaking your privacy, that program is there to initiate the headset when you put it on and shit. HTC will probably have something like that, though I hope that thing is Steam really.
>>
>>333165763
Shit stays shit no matter what you put on it.

Oculus was just a quick cash grab run by unprofessional/misinformed people.
The fact that they continuously lied about it (power and price) thorough the years is enough to shit on it.

They played the shitty "muh exclusive" game too, for a piece of optional hardware, pretty lame if you ask me.
Also there's a botnet included in the package.

They did every wrong step while the Vive is an honest product thought and designed properly..

Facebook

VR is going to die just because too many companies invested in it before it even had time to build a real, sustainable micro-market of engineers and enthusiasts. They completely skipped the grassroots, garage era of any technology's lifespan and jumped straight to a mass market consumer product.

It's ironic in a way because these are all internet era companies that have forgotten how they themselves became huge.

The prove my point, the head of the project bailed out with millions in his pockets, selling it to facebook
From that point, you just knew it was doomed and it's only purpose was to make money, not to make a "new" technology viable.

This. I can guarantee you the Vive has useful info on the back that salespeople can use to sell the product to the customer even if they have very little familiarity with the device, whereas the OR box has a big fat fucking nothing on the back leaving customers unimpressed and salespeople struggling to impress them with zero background knowledge.

Once again showing HTC know how to fucking sell things.

People I know who have had HTC phones have regretted it, saying that they're mostly style over substance dogshit that looks nice but doesn't work great after a short period. Any reason to believe Vive wont be the same thing?
>>
>>333166717

Yep, looks like it, at the very least Facebook/oculus really jumped the horse and broke its fucking back.

Instead of getting people in, and then exploiting them, they pretty much just went "please come in to be exploited".

The Vive lets you change the eye relief and ships with two sets of foam for narrow/wide faces.

The Rift was supposed to ship with two sets of facial interfaces but for some reason they didn't.
>>

>They completely skipped the grassroots, garage era of any technology's lifespan and jumped straight to a mass market consumer product.

What on earth makes you think this is a thing? Do you believe people were jury rigging LCD TVs together in their garage for years before the consumer market made the swap?

Just like most new technologies, it's being pushed to market before maturity and at a premium price. This doesn't kill the technology, it's just means it's going to fumble around in the early adopter phase for a while before settling in as a niche peripheral. I don't think it's ever going to get past niche because it's too inconvenient and anti-social a technology for mass consumption. When they get AR right, that's when the mass market adoption will happen.

read this

https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/1y70ej/valve_vac_and_trust

only once has steam scanned user files and that was for around 500 people, who were flagged using hacks.

> If they were detected VAC then checked to see which cheat DRM server was being contacted. This second check was done by looking for a partial match to those (non-web) cheat DRM servers in the DNS cache. If found, then hashes of the matching DNS entries were sent to the VAC servers.

Instead we have heard zilch, nothing, null explanations why oculus home pings Mark every 30 secs.

And steam closes completely if you so choose. Oculus home doesn't.

Embargoes are often done by contract too, especially when the company really wants to control reviews, e.g. "Don't mention the fact that you have to watch an opening cutscene for 40 minutes before you actually get to play the game."

It's basically just an NDA with an expiry date that is not too distant.

i really dont understand the situation.

They give you a product to test, and they put a gun in your head to talk good about it, and when they want to talk about it?

Its basically farming shills.

Some people should give no fucks and make a good an objetive (pure technical) review of both, and realease it before it launchs, so it can send the worst one (probably oculus) to actual hell.
>>
>>333171779
If you don't give them a date, people rush to make reviews and don't cover it properly. Embargos can also be used to hide a bad product, though. You want the same date for everyone so there's ample time to review it.

there could be 2 situations, i was thinking about the second option wich is that they ship the device to your home and not just go to a place to see it or test it in a "closed enviroment"
like all those youtube bloggers who get copies of game a few weeks early to make reviews on launch.
you dont need that much time to take techincal raw data of the device, most is already aviable, but not in context, like that lenses pic i see once in a while, it shows that the vive has wider FOV, but that also means less pixel density (if done correctly)

>>333172157
Some VR games do recoil but apparently it's kinda weird.

Raw Data for example. Basically a recoil animation is played and then the gun is returned to its proper position. But the flaw with that is...your controller isn't moving. If you stay still, after the recoil the gun will always revert to the exact same position.

I have to re-download the oculus home every time i "need" to update

If the shit runs fine, there is no reason to upgrade anything, unless they make something like imput lag or performance better, but those updates wont come up every single day unless you buy any of this shit on day 1, you need to wait at least 2 months to start to decide, so, its not a real issue.

If im forced to update, u just redownload the installer, and then repeat the process, i could even make a batch to automatically do all this, because exe files will be the same, and they will have the same name..

>I really dont follow your reasoning.
Im not gonna buy this to play hipster indie shit or the lastest AAA, or anything from the oculus store at all (like that project cars fiasco). i will use it to replay older games and mostly for my racing setup using 3rd party drivers like vorpx.
That will be the case when the oculus is a better option because
>more dense screen despite lower FOV
I think this one needs time to be sure about.

This also needs some time to measure it right in the games i play.

This is why i didnt decided yet, but im thinking about what im going to do with "the one"

I'm going to guess it's just conjecture based on the fact that Oculus spend some time talking about how it wants to bring input lag down.
But obviously HTC and Valve would also want to bring it down, so that doesn't mean shit.

For one - GearVR was Oculus' priority product at the time - since its completed and basically obsolete now, he may have been "moved" already, secondly - he worked on tech already in both devices. And he said he is more interested in untethered VR - which in the end - is FAR better than vive or rift or whatever we have, because yelling "room scale" may have blinded a few retards and a million others there - theres nothing "room scale" or "freedom" about being hooked up to a machine with cables running down your head and neck.

Carmack simply wouldn't do a job he is not interested in, I harshly doubt he'll ever be money oriented again, do you think that venture was profit oriented or something?

I can't see untethered VR happening in the next 10 years at least. It would either require you to strap a high end PC to your face, which won't go down in size fast enough to make possible. Or require latency free high bandwidth wireless connection, which would require a breakthrough.

Needless to say, I've been locked out of signing up for it due to excessive wrong answers.
>>
>>333181924

Or it may require someone like Carmack to work on it

Technically, untethered VR already happened, while tethered is just about to ship.
Phones are strong as fuck, once they figure out positional tracking without external shit - you'll be trading graphical fidelity for the tether.
>>
>>333181418
Thats what you get for being a faggot and shooting aircrafts down and taking parts of ukraine what doesnt belong to you. And Karelia. Suits you right.
>>
>>333181425
He needs the money to fund his space venture. Also mobile vr != untethered vr. The device performing the computation is important. It'll be a long time before phones can match a dedicated rig.
>>
>>333182085
Okay yeah, I was assuming the same graphical fidelity. But if you want to sacrifice that, sure.
>>
>>333182219

No, mobile VR = untethered VR, objectively.
Again, its just a difference in computational strength, and phones makes jokes out of computers from 7~ years ago.
Growth by the same margin would make untethered VR in 2025 a certainty with todays desktop graphics.

Mobile is a form of untethered vr, but not the only one. Both HTC and oculus were looking into wireless transmission tech, which is a lot more likely than mobile vr. People are only going to demand higher rez and better graphics, pure mobile is not going to be able to deliver a comparable experience for a long time.
>>

semantics friend

mobile exists and can actually be done, meanwhile the concept of remotely doing computation goes straight up against the current problems with VR - wireless delay.

Both of what we are talking about is so up in the air they are the same "far away".
