We do have a choice thought unlike with phones
phones there are no alternatives as every phone is a tracker, with VR it's still possible to shift to another seller who doesn't want a probe up your ass as part of their tos. Whether people care is a matter of making them aware first and secondly offering an option without it that is competitive.

Companies everywhere are tracking and logging what you do. Your only security is that you're just one of millions, so the only time your internet habits will ever be brought up, is if you're under investigation for something anyway.

The Oculus runtime itself communicates with servers outside, reportedly. You can't use the hardware for anything without that.

this is hardware side since it has to be engineered to give the gps module energy even when it's off. Depending on the enginerring it could bypass the OS completly so it's a matter of what phone and less of what OS.

If i were to guess it's more about tracking where you look in your VR enviroment , advertisers usually do eyetracking studies to perfect their ads but it's small and limited to the participants, imagine if you could personalize it for every viewer. They would wet themself out of excitement.
