Why do Genesis games sound so much better than SNES games?

>inb4 hordes of nintendo fanboys
>>
that is completely subjective, there are some games that sound better on genesis and some on snes.
>>
I love the digitalized sounds in Street of Rage
It sounds so crystal clear
>>
I hear this frequently. I grew up in a Nintendo household and my the only times I played Genesis was at other people's houses, but any time there is a game OST thread, nobody posts Genesis games. What's the point of having a better chip if you don't have good OSTs?
>>
The sound chip in Genesis is trying to emulate actual instruments and contains many wave samples that are straight up recordings of instruments.

The SNES is just your basic sine/triangle waves, it's a very primitive sound chip.

Just no. There are a handful of Genesis games that are able to work magic with the system's limitations, but the majority of Genesis games sound like ass.

Genesis was better for funky bass and metal when done right.
SNES for ambience and orchestral music all-around.

It's true man, dump the YM2612 rom yourself if you need to, or just run some SNES music through an SF2 converter.

if you did you will remember that snes always had better sound and nintendo knew this. that's why they had that stupid "play it loud" marketing campaign because everybody knew which had the better sound.

of course now we can pick the audio chips apart and see which had the better technical specifications and then cherry pick a few examples to support our claim. the truth is that snes, for whatever reason, did sound better than genesis. this wasn't a debate back then, and it isn't now.

Why are there such hostile Genesis fans lately? 1994 was literally more than 20 years ago, it's time to let go.
>>
The two chips were vastly different, the YM2612, which is a FM Synthesis chip (6 FM channels, 4 PSG), and the SPC7000 which is sample based (Changing pitch to create higher/lower notes based on a single instrument sample to save space). SNES could reproduce any sound it had a sample for, and often.. that sound was made on a FM keyboard with a YM2612 chip. The issue comes down to that American sound programmers were lazy fuckers and just used the simple GEMS sound driver which typically sounds like ass.

Non-GEMS Genesis samples:
Thunderforce IV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTQIiIKummw
Rocket Knight Adventures: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSpt9gnz9p0
Ristar (somewhat cheating, Sonic Team game): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTjh0mVzbRk
Alien Soldier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCvW2pulO6E

MegaMan X Flame Mammoth (This one is cheating, since it never appeared on the actual genesis, but is YM2612 accurate): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPNr79y0s94

I like the display on this one, even though it's from a fan game the original style was done as a SNES.. and this is it as done on a YM2612: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPNr79y0s94
Original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaRwxM_OiG8

One last thing: The Sega Genesis Model 1 also contained a feature complete Master System, including the sound chip (A Texas Instruments SN76489) for it, which was often leveraged for additional sound channels.
>>
>>333118848
Using a Tim Follin genesis track is cheating to SPC7000 fans, like using something Sonic Team made.

It really depends on what you're in the mood for, and what type of music you typically like to listen to.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4XCk2HFdNc
>>
>>333114438
Snes actually had reverb panning and all that shit but most of all sonys chip was a dac converter which was is the basis for digital recording. This is why star ocean and tales had live audio. There's no comparison the Genesis had shit sound. Sure the 6800 is great but fm synthesis can't compare to a dac chip
>>
>>333114438
FM synthesis vs soundfont playback. It's better for the kinds of music you lile probably.

Thunder Force IV OST is godlike and would sound like dogshit on SNES.
>>
>>333121182
As a SNES kid, it's the opposite.

Half the people who shitpost about Genesis music only played a couple of shitty shovelware titles at their friend's house 20 years ago, and Sonic. The anti-Genesis shitposting is continuously outrageous in an age where people can easily boot up emulators or consult youtube.

Most of these yokels probably never heard Alisia Dragoon, Gauntlet IV, Landstalker, or any other stellar Genesis soundtrack.
>>
>>333122532

Holy shit. Are you retarded or something?

A DAC is a Digital-Analog Converter, every console has one.

The Genesis had a Motorola 680000 Central Processing Unit. The YM2612/SN76489 was the sound chip.

I mean, are you just parroting "Audiophile" buzzwords? Because that's what it sounds like, I don't want to believe you're that fucking retarded, but by God are you failing to convince me otherwise.

It didn't, actually
the sound chip on the SNES was sony audio chip, way better than the one on the Genesis, it all came down on how to use each chip

The genesis sound chip was very good at doing that punk synth sound, so rock and metal plays VERY well on it, also dat TWAAAAAAAAANG base

It also means it sucked shit to do some classical pieces and less distorted instruments

meanwhile the SNES was the opposite, it could render very well clear sounds, but it lacked the punch to do the TWAAAAAAAANG the genesis could

This is what the Genesis was good at

Favorite Genesis soundtrack? That's a tough one, there are many good ones. I guess if I had to pick one off the top of my head, it would be Hydrocity act 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WR3Eh_516JQ

As for SNES, it would probably be stickerbrush symphony

Not accounting for preference, but Genesis used actual FM Synthesis so it was replicating the same kind of sounds current day musicians were using, so a lot of the best stuff sounds more like music of the time (Streets of Rage, Comix Zone, Sonic). SNES sound capabilities were based pretty much entirely on samples (Genesis could also do samples), so it has a richer sound that imitates a larger range of instruments and you get songs that that sound more like non synth things like orchestras, woodwinds, etc.

Simply put, Genesis hardware is doing real synth oscillation to produce notes, where SNES wasn't, at least as far as I've understood it. I love the sound of both, and doubly so love that both had their own unique styles that really gave each an identity of it's own.
>>
>>333133503
Is this the PAL version? It sounds slower.
>>
>>333114438
They both sound good for different reasons. The SNES was good at one type of music, the Genesis was good at another. They were both good flavors.

The only problem was when they tried to badly port games to one or the other. The SNES always sounded better on ports, though.

There's a few tracks that are lost due to his old youtube account being wiped (not sure as to the reason for that..), but Geckoyamori is probably one of the best YM2612 wizards out there.

Hmm.. This might have been recorded with the PAL/EU Mega Drive they had. The .vgz from project 2612 seems a little faster.

http://16bap.theclassicgamer.net/upgrade/ Seems like that one was recorded on their PAL MD. The JPN MD sounds more like the NA Genesis (NTSC-J and NTSC both operate at 60Hz, while PAL operates at 50Hz, making the music slow down to match the game speed by about 166.66~7ms [10 frames at 60FPS/60Hz]).

>>333136679

I didn't know the music was slower in PAL region

It was pretty good for its time familia. Only real downside was its CPU being slower than Genesis's.

Though the absolute best fucking hardware in the early to mid 90s was NeoGeo. That shit was amazing.

Yeah, most folks don't realize how this made the audio sound different, region locks weren't meant to prevent you from getting a supposedly cheaper game from another region, but to prevent interoperability problems from arising due to competing broadcast standards (NTSC vs PAL vs that other one I can't remember the acronym for), though the former definitely became an issue later on. It's not going to make the music unrecognizable by any stretch, but it is definitely slower.

I'm not a huge fan of the genesis as I prefer the Saturn and the Dreamcast, but I absolutely love FM synths and have a soft spot for the YM2612 so I have to give props to games that make use of it.

This also applies to a lot of older IBM PC compatible games since the old AdLib soundcard (basically the progenitor of proper affordable audio in computer games) also used the ym2612.

This game has two modes Arcade and Special

Arcade is just the original arcade music, while Special has its own Soundtrack

Go to 7:43 for the Special OST

I wish I had a Saturn, my SEGA collection is missing one (and a physical Master System, I want one to mod in the Mark III FM Module, which works with it but the cart sizes are different on the MS and the MkIII, but that's what flash carts are for), but I'd have to get a JPN one so I can actually play most of the games that are worth a damn on it.

I love both Genesis and SNES audio outputs, but I have a serious soft spot for good FM synths.

I imported a JP Saturn and no regrets. There are more than a few really good JP exclusives (admittedly being able to read japanese makes the text heavy ones more workable, and since it's a saturn a lot of it is still 2D gaming.

I have a soft spot for the MKIII also, but that's purely on the aesthetics of the MKIII case, I don't even care about the games.

As for FM Synths, I got one as a kid thinking it was just a sample keyboard, but learned it was a full synth just this past month. Looking to get one that uses a ym2612 just for that nostalgic sound, but I've been looking for ways to do audio facsimiles using a modern waveshaping soft-synth.

The genesis didn't have a better sound chip by any metric you want to use. It was literally worse in every way, Segafriends were so used to the horrible clanking sound they started to dig it, like stockholm syndrome.

>>333114438

I preferred the SNES audio over the Genesis.
Turbografx CD had better audio and better games than Sega CD.

FM synthesis was the method by which a lot of the music of the day was created and Yamaha's DX line of FM synths are still sought after and highly regarded and widely used.

The specific YM2612 chip was the basis of the AdLib sound card which basically defined computer audio reproduction as we know it and gave that distinctive FM synthesis sound to most contemporary PC games back in the day. It's not jsut the Genesis that used it and not only sega fans appreciate it.
