Well it wasn't perfect but I liked the idea of it and the story they were telling.
It was rather silly to aggro something and simply stare at the floor so it won't kill you. I had one moment where I though I heard an enemy shamble off only to look up and stare straight into the abyss.

Probably because games are so mechanically incestuous and homogeneous that it's not even a Mario vs Sonic thing but a bunch of comparatively small guys attacking a juggernaut that they themselves are copying(e.g. Battlefield and Watch Dogs attacking COD and GTAV). Or that racing game that tried to make fun of Mario Kart for whatever reason(they weren't even releasing it on a Nintendo platform) and did so poorly the developers barely cranked out one last game before going bankrupt.

Resident Evil uses the zombie term quite liberally. Hell, once they made the jump to the faster monsters in RE4 and later, the first enemy you fight will have Leon or Chris respectively compare the speedy, thinking enemies to zombies.
But the actual excuse is that while series like RE, Dead Rising or Left 4 Dead have characters openly call things zombies, they're also quite well-versed on the conventions of the genre(Zoey frequently ruminating on them), while series that don't have them frequently take place in settings that don't have zombie fiction(e.g. Walking Dead), so the characters don't have the natural savviness you or I might have.
