But that's false. Gearbox intends to make more Duke games and there were news back in late Summer/Autumn of them trying to find a 3rd party to help with development. There's no news after that.
Pitchford gave an interview back in summer on what he thinks the new Duke must accomplish that basically amounts to Duke having to be revolutionary as a game and the hero more role-model like:

Pretty much what I thought then.
Don't get me wrong, I liked the Duke games. It's just that back then even there were a bunch of single-player FPS games like Blood, Wolfenstein, Unreal, Quake, Doom, Duke, Star Wars: Dark Forces, Outlaws, and Alien Trilogy, the FPS market wasn't as oversatured as it has been in the past 15 years.
We've seen way too many FPS games and Duke can only be Generic FPS or Old-School Doom Clone.
That's all Duke 3D ever was in terms of gameplay.

he just mentioned that they have to keep in mind while making a new duke game, that not only was he revolutionary at the time, but was also to many, a role model, so his existence is more than just throwaway jokes and "HAHA THE JOKE IS MACHISMO" with lines like "power armor is for pussies".
I think he mentions that Duke in Forever is really more a parody of himself, while his original games play him totally straight, despite often being plays on movies, and duke ripping off one liners from them as well. in 3D, he's a genuine kind of late 80's early 90's action hero. In Forever, he's a walking parody of the action hero
IMo sounds like not only do they have to wait and see what they can do with Duke that would be fresh, but waiting for the moment to be just right. a character like Duke wasnt too terribly controversial when he first appeared, or, at least, not for the reasons he would be today. back then, the criticism wouldve been, "you shouldnt show that in a kids game" while today, it would be "MISOGYNIST PIG, DUKE IS SEXIST KILLALLDUKES". the environment that bred Duke doesnt exist anymore, which makes him a hard sell today, where even Arnold Schwarzenegger movies dont do well at the box office and movies like the Expendables, which are callbacks to the "good ol' days" dont do well either.
for Duke to thrive, we need that macho sort of action hero culture that came about in the postwar post-vietnam era, and i think he gets that.

dont kid yourself. that was part of the appeal, just like people didnt play Mortal Kombat just for the riveting fighting game action, but at for the fatalities.
being able to have duke give a hooker money to "shake it baby" was part of the appeal. he was an 'adult" action hero, not the more sanitized family friendly kind that came about in the 90's

on Rotten Tomatoes, Expentables 2 has the highest rating at 65%, while the others are below 45. compare that with the the original 2 terminators, which have an above 90 score, or First Blood, which is 87.
I know RT isnt the best metric for success, but that says something.
