Gene is amazing, the FOX sneaking suit looks slick in-game (promo shots of it are garbage though) and the fact that each boss character plays a bit differently is amazing. Also you can play as my MGAC!D waifu Teliko, and Paramedic, and Ocelot, and Zero. The only unforgivably bad thing about it is the Gray Fox retcons. All that needs to be done is to port it to a new console, add infinity mission and the bonus character from MPO+, make sure the controls are about the same as MGS3, and take out all mentions of Null being Frank Jaeger and boom: fantastic game and a must-play for MGS fans.
Portable Ops was a pretty decent game, shame a lot of folks don't like it. That section where Snake got sick was neat.

Now that we have PW and V, PO doesn't quite fit in as well, but as a continuation of the story in 3, of the Patriots, the Legacy, and ties to the future, it was a MUCH better direction to head towards.

How does it contradict that sequence at all? Big Boss was depressed and on his own when he gets captured to take the blame for renegade FOX.
It literally introduces the plot point of who the Patriots really were. There are no direct contradictions in sequels besides the Gray Fox thing but his backstory was retconned before as well.
Same with Huey after PW and V showed him making Metal Gear units. Bringing him back to life is dumb but not unheard of, look at Madnar. Look at Big Boss.
And while the canon is tight with every mainline installment, that doesn't make it bad.

That's because the FOX soldiers were in different areas than the grunts who wore the brown jumpsuits. If you played as a fox soldier the guys in the brow suits would attack you too, because they knew someone was out kidnapping their men and they know you don't belong in that area.

The plot point of who the patriots are is barely mentioned and you lose nothing from going from mgs3 to mgs4 except for a bit of foreshadowing that Zero was the leader ("the man with the same codename as null")
Meanwhile it retcons gray fox entirely, the fact that there's a working metal gear called metal gear is a contradiction unto itself (Granin just said "metal gear" as a way of describing it, it was never the actual name of the project. PW gets it right in that Huey just calls the first Metal Gear like that as a homage to his friend Granin. In MPO it's just called metal gear as if it were the name of the actual project.), the fact that big boss gets a boatload of money at the end of it is never mentioned again (in PW his private army is small and with little to no funds, and he could not have used gene's money for building foxhound since that's an army unit), mgsv contradicts the way Ocelot got the remaining half of the Legacy back and made it so that Big Boss ordered him to give it to Zero (so BB was already aware of the patriots when that happened), in mgs4, pw and mgsv it is mentioned that big boss started drifting off Zero's influence long before 1971, etc etc
while some of the story would fit it doesen't really add anything to the existing canon and it's obvious kojima wanted to erase it with every single game he made afterwards, wether that's good or bad I don't care, but since he wrote every other main entry in the series it's pretty clear that PO just doesen't fit anymore

Portable Ops is semi-canon. Ocelot outright mentions the ending in a tape recording in MGSV, and Kojima has said that elements of it are part of the canon. It just isn't all that important overall and can be skipped.

I think it was too real for the average gamer. It really put the horrors of war into perspective, especially since dying in ranked made you lose that operative forever. Also couldn't really play females in unraked since everyone there just did Military RP or regular ERP, and often the punishment for female insubordination was rape in regular RP servers.

Kojima didn't write MPO beyond the initial skeleton of it, to be fair. He wasn't really very happy with quite a few elements of it, but was unable to take more of an active role in it due to MGS4 being developed alongside it.

The controls in PO were shitty, but once you got used to them they were manageable.
The rest of the game was rough. The decision to have a stamina bar was completely retarded, especially with the stipulation that when it ran out, you would die. So already 2 or your 4 inv slots were dedicated to food and medicine, giving you 2 total options for other equipment. (remember, if you run out of stamina or health, your character dies and you can't get them back. Considering you needed to drag people halfway across the map at some points, food was required. Medicine might not have been, but it was good to have some just in case. Losing good characters sucked.)
So now you've got 2 spaces for every other item in the game. 1 was dedicated to a weapon, usually the Mk22. The last one you had got the freedom to pick anything, though this was limited to grenades, extra ammo, an extra gun, NVGs, traps, etc.
That was the lamest part of PO. You got a lot of cool items to mess with, but you could hardly ever use them because they weren't practical.
