when we stopped having noticeable upgrades in system hardware and arcades still existed.

im old enough to have gone from the 8 bit to whatever bit would be today. its the change that forced devs to use systems to make good games.

that i feel is where we lost the magic. also, most devs and companies i loved just went insane in the last 8 or so years.

would you have EVER thought to have seen as bad an FF game as 13? or see megaman games just not come out anymore?

if i told myself this back in 1995, i would have thought future me was insane.

I was there in the early 2000s when people were trashing games from the '90s and ANYTHING rendered in 3D with polygons, claiming only truly good games were made with sprites, period. Back then these people called the PS2 a pile of shit and considered the Super NES to be the last video gaming console with quality content. FPS games of then like Quake and Halo got called garbage as much as Far Cry and Call of Duty do now. People were lamenting the death of the 2D platformer and adventure games, badmouthing the emerging styles of game design for being inferior formats driving "true" video games out. Some actually defended cartridges and blamed optical media for making then-modern game design "sins" possible. PC gaming was blamed for the standardization of incomplete-on-release products requiring patches. FFVI was the last good Final Fantasy. World was the last good Super Mario game. A Link to the Past was the last good Zelda game.

It never changes. Ever.

My opinion is that gaming lost its soul when Japan gave up.

Whatever the reason is - lack of Jap love for online, the pressure of developing for HD hardware, decline of arcades, I'm not sure.

Also, we're ironically hamstrung by how powerful the hardware is now. We thought we wanted photorealism in games but we've ended up with Far Cry, Asscreed, Fallout, which are basically the same Unfog Map games.

I think games like MGS2 are better where technological constraint forces a tighter focus.
>>
>>333088118
One big thing games are lacking today are difficulty modes, like playing AC or fallout without any guides or maps, now that would be a true exploration challenge.
>>
In the 90s and early 00s devs could still do what they wanted to do and they really wanted to create those games everyone loves.

Too bad they were successful. Because of that more and more money got put into them and with money comes pressure. Pressure for even bigger success and more sales. And usually that means bigger audience.

And how do you get that audience? By streamlining everything to make sure that it gets atleast a certain number of people interested.

This is how creativity died and now games are all about meeting investor goals.

They are part of the system but the not the cause.

Look at IGN for example.
>At release the entire site was blasted in ads for Mass Effect 3
>10/10 best epic adventure action ever
Now would they have gotten those ads and money with a fair review?

The videogame industry is like every other entertainment industry. It got big and now its all about sales. And publishers will do everything to get them. And of course ''journalists'' are not saying no to that opportunity.

>this game is good!
>better than everything else!
>trust us!

It became a huge industry. This means huge amounts of marketing. Which means hype. Which inevitably leads to disappointment. Video games are art. >decade

You mean decay?

It's already decayed. Nobody likes to think about it, but 80% + of /v/ is on other sites like reddit as well these days. 4chan is mainstream whether you like it or not, and being mainstream brings much more shitposting and less creativity. If you wanted to see a good /v/ you could have gone on (4x2)chan in the early days, you could have non-shitposting threads right through January 2015. That was because of the userbase being small and generally interested in discussing videogames.

Everyone remembers that old /v/ and /b/ were hostile places with pizza etc getting posted all the time. People that weren't there talk about it being the wild west or some such. It wasn't. Mods controlled the board even in 07 or whenever you think oldfaggotry starts. The whole point of being offputting and having insualr memes/codes of behavior ("lurk moar") was everyone who stayed actually cared about what they posted about. Newfags weren't people who couldn't triforce or use memes right or whatever, newfag was really a term for people whose attitude will never lead to OC or productive threads. Current /v/ is shit because it is mainstream, and mainstream means lots of people who don't really care about the subject and are happy to shitpost all day. Everyone forgets that calling you a faggot and posting brilliant OC have never been contradictory.

Don't even get me started on how half the lulzy stuff started on SA.
