They covered their localization costs via the kickstarter, so it's all profit from here on out and they're fine with a long tail, it's a long running franchise not some flash-in-the-pan IP. They'll be happy with a slow trickle of new people over time. Sure, if it stunning blows away all expectations and becomes a hit that'd be nice and all but they don't need it to succeed.

I doubt advertising is something they care much about for this stuff though anyway, it's all made on a shoestring budget and people learn about it mostly through word-of-mouth or seeing dumps on the net. It's not for normalfags.

Care to cite the law on that? I'm not aware of anything legally restricting advertising even of flat-out legal pornography, and that would seem to be a blatant violation of the 1st Amendment. Are you sure you're not confusing voluntary retail and public space restrictions vs law? To the courts, all publicly accessible websites are the same in terms of public access. If porn games can be advertised on 4chan they can be advertised on Steam, there is zero legal difference (though in terms of business interests Valve might not want to). For that matter, Hatred was AO and advertised on Steam.

The problem is that the decent ones all tend to come from japan and they cost more because they have to pay for the license and the translators, compared to the OELVNs that don't have such overheads so they can charge less.
