I've always left their names as they are, I like to think of them as their own character and if they have my name it just doesnt feel like how it should.

Renaming the characters is definitely just a carryover from the old days. I guess it's okay to give the player some choice, but it just works to make the game a bit more awkward.
Though at best and when we played FF9 as kids, we gave our names to different characters and due to native language other than english we gave birth to a sentence "Heal anon with mud!" when basically talking about curing vivi.
