I just got around playing the the first game and damn I love it despite its lack of polish.
Scaling exp and attack animations are a godsend, harvesting and shorcuts are really half-assed.
Some quests are funny, well worth going out your way to do them.

No, you will do fine without buffs. At least I am doing fine at the half point, the only buffs I have are on samurai, and I never use them. Most useful is Trick Hand, which enhances the effect of healing items.

I think I got a problem.
Basically I can't equip things without the game hanging while trying to exit menus. I got the latest Armory upgrade during the Shibuya dungeon, before going to kick the dragonfly Imperial Dragon.
Trickster is a lot of fun with almost guaranteed crits and getting 3 extra turns forever.

Hacking is kind of shit, the defense and attack boosts are pretty cool though, and airsoft training has its moments. Very pleasant to listen to the keys clacking. The attack boost doesn't really make up for not having a third character with strong attacks though.

Destroyers have a chance to "destroy" enemies. As an enemy accumulates more D-Depth, you can use stronger skills on them.
They also specialize in tanking and countering enemy attacks (which also increases D-Depth).

Grand Knights History is fun and has that Vanillaware look and feel, though it feels something is missing without the online.
Monster Hunter Portable 3rd is a must, especially the HD version if you're emulating.
My only complaint was that the game was too easy. And the post game dungeon has dragons as random encounters so it's not even fun anymore.

If there's undoubtedly and assuredly one thing this game does 100% correctly it's letting you use any portrait for any class. This should be a feature in every game that has you picking classes.

In my experience, daggers are pretty underwhelming. Like the paralysis they can inflict has no problem landing on dragons, but the fact that I only ever saw it stop maybe 3 attacks after 2 chapters really says something about that, and I think it has to do with the level the skill is at, but it's not worth it. The best skill the have is one that increases the damage and duration of poison on an enemy, but it really won't add up all that mcuh. Guns can blind and that's a bit more reliable, plus the do more damage.
Not really fond of the story, gameplay pretty decent. Doesn't really interest me that much, playing it feel like a chore.
Too bad there's no character customization, and can only use the default characters portrait. The way they make the army dude useless against Murakumo also a bit cringe for me.
Ah, if only I could play as the SDF guy or there's class like that. Too bad, I guess this just wasn't for me.
