Other: Woodcutting.
Fishing was easier to half afk at so it was more comfy. Also, generally people always needed food yet ore supplies were dependent on how many people wanted to level their other skills. High level alchemy balanced this out to give ores a fixed rate but the money/hour wasn't very high.
Due to bots, the game never rewarded players too much for mining and fishing for long hours. It was better to kill dragons.
I'm talking about the 2007ish era of Runescape.
Old School or RS3 in this case?
Mining is easier in Old School.
RS3 fishing is pretty fun post Invention.
I liked fishing more because you could get 'opportunity money'. Know what I mean? Like selling cooked lobsters at the wilderness' edge where people desperately want them. Nothing like that for mining.

The new scam in oldschool is doubling money. I see it all the time at the GE. Apparently you give a guy money he accepts then trades you back double. For small trades they actually do it but larger ones they just log out. I laugh every time I see it .

I currently have a fishing rod that's basically a vacuum.
It has a chance to burn the fish for 2x exp, and 6% more chance to catch on each tick.
Also it levels up as you fish with it, and once it hits level 10 I can dissassemble it for damn near 500k invention exp.
It just adds some fun twists to skilling in general, and its fun to have items level up with you.

An evolution on it is the 'conditional money doubling scam'. You write out a set of instructions with shittons of loopholes and gotchas which people have to follow if they want their money doubled. When advertising your money doubling scam, link these instructions and say that you're only able to sustain the money doubling because of the people that fail.
People will send you money thinking they're the clever geniuses who will actually get the instructions right, but you deny them no matter what and say they missed one.

Still has an active community and two good games.
RS3 is more modern, more about endgame and PvE.
Old School is dated, but built around carving your own social niche in the economy.
Both are great, RS3 has a new client coming that makes it more of a modern game.

best perk is honed 5 (10% catch rate boost) and furnace 3 (15% chance for action to give double xp), but settle for 4 and 2 respectively unless you are 100+ invention, perhaps even 120. Dragonfire components from rcb/dfs for furnace, honed you get from sharp components.
