But then I got another skill that just hits for 180 potency and I could use it twice to do 180+180 instead of 100+200. So why the fuck would I ever use the other two? None of them had any other effects. I don't get it.
There's all sorts of symbols hovering over player and npc names and none of them are explained, although I figured out a few like the weird green thing meant I was a new char and a bullseye on attackable npcs meant they were part of my hunting challenge.

I don't know. I had a hell of a lot of fun when I first started playing ffxiv. Much more than I am nowmaybe it was because I had someone to play with.
The world was vibrant and fun, music is fucking amazing. It was zen as fuck. Just exploring the world, doing menial tasks, killing monsters, learning more about the main cities, the scions, primals and ascians. Getting my chocobo pal, and doing class quests, such a good, fun time.
I was fucking garbage at my class back then too, and I still had fun button mashing random shit.
Now I just sit around in a city waiting for ques, waiting for raid days. A lot of the things that made this game fun are gone now. I still enjoy myself, but I very rarely get that sense of wonder anymore.
I think the only reason I stick with this game now is because of how much I used to like it, it's still the same game I had so much fun with, so I stay. Expansions breathe a ton of life into it too, but there's a pretty massive gap between the release of a new one.

Lancer is pretty borring till like 35. After that your rotation is constantly changing until you cap at 60. I didn't start with it so the one button aspect of the class was a nice change of pace. If you want some more attacks worth weaving in try picking up some levels in archer and cross classing their poison arrow ( and raging strikes) Fracture and other Warrior skills are good too and you need level 15 marauder eventually anyway to become a dragoon. I like the potency system, it makes it easier to figure out what you should be doing without a guide. The reason I appreciate it the most is for DoT's which I always found hard to calculate in other games. DoT's tick every 3 seconds in this game, so its potency x duration/3 for their total damage. Like appreciate that potency showed you that spamming vorporal thrust is the way to go.
By level 60 you have 2 4 step combos, your heavy thrust one, chaos thrust ( which starts off vorporal) and the 4th strike is a random back/side positional. By confirming combos you can add duration to a buff, and you can expend that buff by throwing energy lances.
2 4 step combos, heavy thrust, 3 DoTs, 2 aoes ( a pbaoe and a sweet line aoe) 2 self dps cooldowns, 1 party dps cooldown, 1 tp resture, 3 jumps, 1 disengage, 2 single ability buffs, 3 defense cooldowns, 1 super nuke. Theres your load out.

Theres more beneifit to stacking 2 ninjas than there is to any other melee dps, and Monks are broken strong compared to the other 2 right now, people should just play that. Lancer is the slowest of the 3 melee, their animations make double weaving neigh impossible except for a few skills. Ninjas can double weave with impunity. Unsure about monk right now, but they have a .7 second GCD so I doubt theirs time with all their positionals

I can't get over the fact you're forced to level up a separate class to 15 just to get your first job let alone be able to get all classes to max should you so choose.
Eventually the MSQ will catch up to you so you're forced to go do more duty finder shit or leves alongside your regular job leveling. Then you add on a system where you only have sidequests that you didn't do the first time around or just literal grinding of leves/fates/hunting journal that juts kills all desire to level up another class or job.
It's such a shit system and makes no sense to me that it still exists. It doesn't matter how long or short it takes. You're just running around a roughly level appropriate zone doing the same leves/fates waiting for duty finder to pop for 15-60 levels depending on how badly you want to level alt content.

That doesn't make the system any less retarded.
The crafting aspect is fine. Almost all MMO crafting is something along the lines of that but usually blocked to 1-2 per character. The fact I can be everything is a nice change of pace should I dedicate time.
But the appeal that "any single character can be any class/job" is lost when outside of your main class/job that you're taking through the main story it's a complete boring grind. Grant you the MSQ isn't amazing but they're at least something to have you do and should you have done all sidequests you literally just have FATE/leve grinding for X amount of levels on alts.
I remember the very first time I played and I had just hit 30 on pugilist. I knew I had to go and level a lancer so I did. I knew what amounted to the optimal route to do logs and leves so it didn't take forever but it was still super fucking boring and it's never gotten any better.

If you want to continue and poopsock the fuck out of the MSQ and actually do the content in front of you (even shitty sidequests) you shouldn't be forced into doing weird side-side-side content that's on an infinite loop just to fill up bars. My feelings towards XIV are complicated in a different way. There's so much to grind, but the progression layout punishes your grinding and makes it extremely easy to get content just by spacing your time out and playing casually instead. Sometimes I cap out my lore and I'm still having fun but wish I had unlimited lore, and sometimes I'm frustrated that my lore isn't capped and the reset is coming up.

GW2's leveling is pretty shit. It is not too different from FFXIV's run from public quest to public quest slowly filling up a bar.
WoW's current system isn't too different, either. Though the quests tend to be pretty bearable, it is the same system of "run around doing what is essentially side content while waiting for dungeon queue to pop."
Really, FFXIV's big failure in this regard is that FATEs and dungeons are the fastest way to level without a doubt. There should be more one-off quests in leveling zones that offer more experience-lucrative rewards. Heavensward was better about this, as it has actual questlines that stretch on for a while unrelated to the MSQ.

Well for what it's worth, I don't see a problem with unearned lore rolling over into subsequent weeks since you're still earning the same amount as everyone else.
Like if you were busy week 1 and only earned 300/450, your week 2 cap becomes 600 to make up the deficit.
WoW did something similar with their PvP weekly capped currency, otherwise there was no way you could possibly catch up if you joined mid-season.

Huh. Whenever I see the New Player message I offer to explain stuff, and whenever I do people usually follow along. Never had any problems in any of the DF dungeons with the exception of the Vault and a healer that simply couldn't cope with the last boss, literally throwing a tantrum when I offered some advice.

Is it just Opener, then prioritise Huton > Slashing debuff > Shadow Fang > Mutilate > Aeolian; while using Trick Attack on cooldown?
Because I can rotate skills just fine (1320 DPS on Stone/Sky/Sea dummy @ i210), but I have no intuition when it comes to killing adds or popping damage cooldowns.

ffxiv is a shitty game, don't even bother, just go play wow if you actually care about anything other than roleplaying. i have thousands of hours in the game and was even server first for one of the older raids on one of the most popular servers (even though its the roleplaying server lmao)
