I don't understand how I enjoyed this as a kid. I can still appreciate some cool things about it but it's unplayable now.
That being said, I'd fucking love an actual new version of AO or a sequel or something. The setting was fucking awesome. I've been looking for something like it ever since and I haven't found it yet.

WoW and more popular MMO's have evolved to have so much better gameplay than AO had when it came out. Maybe if you were playing a Doctor in a group, or a nanomage it would be more interactive but it really is an unfortunate slog of a game now.

I dunno. MMOs back then were about interaction, planning, and socializing. Long cooldowns, shoddy movement, and auto-attack based combat let you talk to your team during fights without having to type at 500wpm or use voice chat. It let you set up combos with your allies and also get to crack some jokes while waiting.
Maybe it's the fast paced interactive combat that has killed the social aspect of MMOs.

Yes this i enjoy slower paced MMOs where grinding is easy with just 1 hit kills.
You were always welcome in new guilds and made new friends easily and had fun playing in groups or twinking pvp gears and builds.
bought the first game when it came out for the heck of it since the xbone had nothing else.
ended up putting a good hundred hours into it.
now i bought the sequel. good games with horrendous launch balancing. usually gets fixed a month or so later. free dlc too.
it's all i play and haven't met anyone that plays it, on /v/ at least

me and my buddy that I knew since kindergarden would call each other every day after school for 5+ hours and play mmorpgs and warcraft custom games while talking on our home phones
we probably put at least a thousand or more hours into anarchy online, the greatest part was we never even made it past 110~, we just kept rerolling together.
