A 8-bit indie game that actually does the 8-bit gimmick well. Great platforming, great bosses, the story's not too important but what you're given about it is pretty good.
Also, the Plauge Knight DLC is damn good too. Same levels, but it does change some things with story, dialog, and certain events. PK is a lot more mobile than SK, and honestly I like playing as him.

i thought it was only okay. it was very "safe" and therefore not very daring or exciting up until the final levels, which i thought were markedly better. i liked the final boss a lot
i thoughtfreedom planetwas a much better retro game in the same year. it had a lot more flaws but i preferred it because rather than "safe" it was fueled by 100% pure sonic the hedgehog autism and real love for the genesis

Only good thing with Shovel Knights art direction is the game itself matched what it was trying to look like.
No complex mechanics, no millions of artifacts on screen, just something that looks like it belongs on an actual NES. Hell they even black out the background during the mid boss fight which is something that use to happen on NES games.
They were originally going to keep to the NES color palette but decided against that to add some detail.
