I think you might just want to take a slightly closer look at what was in some of the previous titles.
As for why? The same reason that shmups got the moe anime treatment: because they know that whatever fanbase was still around would snatch up the game regardless of what it looked like, and so they tried to catch the weeb/otaku audience, hoping to expand a bit or at least buff up sales. No clue if it worked, though.
