So I just got a new phone recently and went to download a few games that I had bought a while back, but didn't play much because they were taking up too much space on my old Nexus 4.
Half of them have now been withdrawn by the publishers (mostly EA and Gameloft), and the ones that I were able to download, most of them now say my device is incompatible or they get stuck trying to acquire a license or sign in to google play.
This is worrying to me. We're looking at a digital distribution-only future for gaming in the next few years, one where publishers can just discontinue games whenever they feel like it, and if you bought it, well, fuck you, you can't play any more.
A bunch of mediocre mobile games are no great loss, but it sets a precedent for what's going to happen on consoles, and probably PC as well if Microsoft have anything to do with it.
Anyone else been burnt by this?

I'm not usually made uncomfortable by trypophobia but this is pretty gnarly.
Can I post cute spiders in this thread?
>>332962886
steam has rules for this. A publisher can remove a game from the store, but it still stays in users libraries. So relax. For example, I own Universe at War: Earth Assault, but you can no longer find it in the steam store. And I can install it and play it right now if I wanted to.

>spider with hands
THEY'RE EVOLVING
>>332964297
but what happens when more and more games start requiring connections to master servers all the time? On PC it can be worked around most of the time, but if it's consoles you're screwed
>>332964756
Then this isn't a problem with digital distribution but just games in general.

This is exactly why games for windows live failed and why Windows Marketplace is going to fail.
Of course, we have no room to complain. I own 200 games on Steam and Valve has zero reason to continue their service forever. They could cut it off at any time.
This is just the future we chose. Physical media is inconvenient, and having platforms which you are able to customize and control is also inconvenient.
>>332968110
Pretty soon there's going to be games that are lost forever because the plug was pulled and there's no way to play them offline. It's a shame.
