I've tried them all, and although I have my preferences and ones i don't like, it doesn't take much to get used to any of them, even if some take more time than others.
But this controller...it sucks, everything is all over the place, and is the only controller that makes my hands physically hurt after 30-40 minutes.
Since dual analog sticks are a thing, i've always preferred the symmetrical design, but as far as asymmetrical design goes, the Xbox design is the way to go, literally perfect...the steam controller is the exact opposite, both physically and conceptually.

Steam controller is a hunk of shit, the Wii U Pro controller has digital triggers meaning it's worthless for anything racing, and the Xbone/360 controller are only good for 3D games and absolute shit for 2D.

If the DS4's thumbsticks were set lower/deeper into the frame of the controller (possibly requiring everything else to shift), it would be the perfect controller layout. Only fat people holding it improperly would have problems.
Still, the loss of multi-stage pressure sensitive buttons and the squishy triggers does hold it back. The Microsoft layout can still be said to be better for games that primarily use the left analog and right face buttons in a 3D environment with only minimal camera adjustment during gameplay, but such games are really rare.

The D-pad is better than the 360's, but that's about all it has going for it. Xbone is probably the best controller right now. Wii U Pro would be up there with it if the face buttons and right stick weren't swapped.

In terms of a general pc primary controller, I'd say DS4 is the best you can do right now. It gets perfect compatibility since there's great ds4-to-360pad wrappers you can use, its has improved build quality over the ds3, and the d-pad makes it /vr/ approved. The touchpad can be used as a mouse too, but thats more of a gimmick then a feature I guess.

It's not for everyone, but I love it. It takes getting used to, but that's no fault of the controller itself. Analog and dual analog also took some getting used to when they first came along. But it's miles better than any other controller for shooters and games that would normally require KB+M. It also works surprisingly well for just using your computer from the couch, not at all frustrating or finicky once you get used to it. Not sure why everyone in this thread is shitting on it, most places I've looked people have liked it (or at least been just indifferent towards it).

If you're playing a 3D game like a shooter or an action game like Dark Souls you're going to be using both sticks most of the time.
If you're playing a 2D game like a platformer you're going to be using the dpad and face buttons at all times.

I disagree about nintendo d-pads, they've been frankly awful for the longest time now. It was an abortion on the 64 pad, outdid themselves with an even worse d-pad on the GC pad, then maybe slightly improved from shit to mediocre on wii (although I've had a terrible experience with the responsiveness on wii remote d-pads), and they've stuck to mediocrity again with the wii u d-pads. It goes back to total ass on the 3ds side of things, especially when you factor in the position of the d-pad.

The latest Xbone pads are the best controllers by a long shot, since they fixed the annoying bumpers the original production Xbone pads had.
Although I still use my DS3 when playing Dark Souls, it just doesn't feel right using the Xbone or 360 controller for Souls games.

I have an xbone elite controller, and I like it better than anything else, sans m&kb. The dpad attachment is awesome, although the paddles get in the way until you get used to them.

I always preferred asymmetrical ever since trying it but after using the Wii U pro controlled I realized symmetrical isn't the problem. It's Sony's symmetrical analog placement that is the problem.
Unless you position your thumbs on a Sony controller in a non-standard way, your thumbs will touch and it's just not a comfortable layout for long playing sessions. Sony has just never made good controllers. I'm glad they finally made a more modern ergonomic controller after using the same design for almost 20 years but it just isn't a good controller (and their are also build quality and battery life issues)

interesting, I've never tried a Vita.
I think one of the reasons the DS fat's dpad was so exceptional was because it had to be.
That system had almost equal 2D and 3D games and only the dpad to control the entire library.
Somehow they managed to make a dpad that felt good for 2D platformers but also remarkably very comfortable for 3D games like Mariokart and SM64.

I found this to be an issue with the Dual Shock 3, but I've never had any problems like that with the DS4. It's all a matter of opinion, of course, but the DS4 quickly surpassed the 360 controller as my favorite.

I managed to get as far as beating 1-5 on the SMB: All Stars version of the first game. Seemed fine to me.
The original Mega Man Zero I decided to try on a whim and holy shit, it's an absolute joy with the d-pad. Beat Aztec Falcon in two tries.
I didn't play a lot of Aria of Sorrow, but enough to level up and get back to my save point. Seems fine. I kinda forgot where I was in the game, which is why.
Gotta say, on the whole, I disagree with you. I'm glad I did this, though.

1. You map everything to the surfaces, so you don't need to leave them. A broken config is one where you have to leave the surfaces to hit a button
2. Gyro is amazing
3. Mouse joystick emulation is amazing
4. Mouse region is amazing
5. In many games, Keyboard + Mouse > Joystick, for what you emulate. Because direct mouse input > emulated mouse input
