Hammerhead with 2x Heavy Auttocannons, 2x Light Assault Guns on the front, 2x Harpoons and 2x LR PD Laser is a good, easy to pilot and cheap early game destroyer for new players. Its what I used when I first started out.

You can but carrier/fighter fleets aren't really viable unless you intend to put a few couple of destroyers and at least one cruiser on the field. Also they die like flies unless you're fielding Diable fighters and even then they get exhausted fast because they have 0 shields.

This also makes them ridiculously expensive. Every fighter wing scrapped takes a bite out of your supplies.

If you get one really huge battleship you can solo the game but it will be hard mode, not impossible but hard. Fighters are not really needed but can be helpful. Or do you insist on fighters? Then you need something with flightdecks or they will not respawn=useless.

I recommend an appro light BS if you wanna go solo, those are borderline broken.

only playing the base game, I've found wolf frigates with a pulse laser to be a good all-round early game choice. The blink ability is just super-useful, and AI buddies can kite/kill enemy ships forever.

Ignoring the heavy slot on a sunder and just throwing 3 medium beam lances on the front was easy to fly and absurdly effective.

Tri-Jew stations and planets. Have you tried searching on the Hybrasil star system? There are a good amount of big tri-tachyon stations there.

The Hyperion is pretty rare though, you might be searching for a while.

You can often find lasher, hammerhead, and enfercer on the military shipyard tap.
Starting with lasher:
-general mix of kindtic and explosive with motre kinetics: 2 LAG with 3 LMGs, or 2 dual-LMGs with a LAG with 2 vulcans.
-for missiles, reapers if you're gonna pilot it for your self, harpoons/sabots for AI controlled.
-prioritize vents but you also need caps

-hammerhead
-2 hypeevelocity drivers/2 heavy autocannons/2HMGs on the front, depending on playstyle(longrange/standoff/assault)
-2 LAG or vulcans on front
-2 LAG or vulcans on back
-try to use ballistics instead of energy, got to take advantage of the ship system in maximum effectiveness
-reapers or harpoons on the front. Single jarpoons r sabots cost zero OP wth optimized assembly.

-3HMG&2Assault chainguns can gind down most foes in an instant if you can get close
-2HMG, 1 assaultchangun, 2 Flak/dualflak is preety solid and is extremely survivable
-5 hypervelocity is nuts at range and can shut down cruisers but takes a long time to kill something. Use with support, pilot it yourself, it's flux is going to be horrid
-Hardened shields can prevent a suprise overload
-harpoons with expanded racks is the boring yet solid choice
-full on reapers are OP light while being very helpful against those pesky herons

I've been playing for a few days now, haven't got super far (two destroyers, two light carriers and a bunch of frigates and fightes) but it's fun
I installed starsector+ after fooling around with the vanilla game and it feels like a big upgrade

I managed to capture a Stheno and a Thunderstorm while bounty hunting, how lucky did I get?

Also is there a way to buy supplies/fuel without buying the whole stack or shift clicking?

I make 22k every month from my faction and that usually pays for supplies and fuel expended. Fuel per light year is fucking ridiculous though, that's where the real cash sink is.

Buy from black market or military for supplies. If you really need cash then fight fleets by yourself, you'll see 200~ credits to 1200 credits~.

Start off with the objective of a destroyer and three frigs. Join fights with patrols against pirates with your ship only and kill stuff. If you get the aformented ships start going for fleet bounties. The cheaper ones first, and as you kill them gather money and buy ships from chizmocoztoc black market or nortia militaru market.

In other news the Vindicator is fucking slow. The Gungir Cannon is cool but this ship feels more support instead of head-on fighting. Not exactly what I wanted for my cruiser but GG. It's also cancer to pilot, I miss my Sunder's infinite flux capacity.

They need a bit of a different approach: they vent really super fast, but can't dissipate shit the rest of the time. They shine with their high burst damage weapons but can't apply constant pressure. Better invest in Leaderships for command points and use those Engage and Avoid orders liberally and gang up on isolated targets. They aren't that expensive compared to other mod ships, so while you can expect some losses you should be able to replace them.
If you want to focus on combat, I found them quite more enjoyable when mixing their "hammer" ships with some low tech "anvils" like Enforcers or Dominators, instead of running a pure Scy fleet.
