It's superior to DS and DS2 hub in every way.
DS hub was literally shit.
Nexus made sense cause it was the teleport area to the other worlds, you had to pass through it as everything was disconnected.
Firelink was nothing it connected into like 4 areas and was mostly not worth coming back to.
Majula was basically the same shit as firelink but people act like it is different. It was a bit shit cause you had to warp back to level up.
Hunters dream had like 3 things to do in it and felt pretty forced, it looked cool though.
DS3 firelink is like the nexus but without being the gateway to different parts of the world. It is just a forced area for all your NPCs

I think it looks horrible. There was literally nothing I likes about DaS2. I feel they even managed to completely fuck up the lore. DaS3 is way better though. Really liked all the different endings.

Would you really call Firelink a hub? At least in DeS you HAD to level up from the Maiden, you had a basic blacksmith, spell and miracle vendors plus Patches, Urbain, Freke, Yuria and the dude in Brushwood who would all come back, and some stay as venders. In short, the Nexus is a hub more than any of the others since it has both some basic and some advanced provisions, links to everywhere in the game and the only play you are able to improve your character. It's a no-brainer

I'd say Firelink Shrine because of its atmosphere.
The fact that the NPCs come and go, and the nature of the hub just fits so well with the moody and- I dunno, transient atmosphere.
Demon's Souls' hub has a great atmosphere too, though.
