It was well received mechanic-wise (with the only exception being that you couldn't kill the guests any more), however the game was absolutely riddled with bugs. That was mostly due to Atari trying to shove it out the door as quickly as possible to take advantage of the market, even though it wasn't close to being done.
Frontier said 'fuck that' and broke off to publish their own games, thus why Planet Coaster isn't a proper tycoon game, because they don't have the license.

This is one of the food booths. This is the level of detail that's going on in every food booth all the time. Also they have it running at a perfect smooth framerate right out of the early access gate. Also everything is 100% customizable, in fact most buildings (on the exterior at least) are just mostly blank canvases that you're supposed to decorate and create yourself. Also all the details are perfect like people milling around and forming properly staggered and clustered lines in ques instead of perfect machine spacing and all of the spotlights and other lighting works dynamically and can be put anywhere and everything about it looks fucking amazing. And it's in pre-alpha.

Also worth mentioning is Parkitect, which is being made to be as authentic to the original RTC games as possible while still offering lots of improvements, like a camera that can be pulled off the isometric grid if needed (but sticks to it by default of course).
Personally I'm more interested in something new rather then the same game I've already played a million hours on and I'm more excited about PC, but this looks well made all the same. There's really absolutely no reason to buy RCTW at this point, it's completely outclassed.

I love this iso shit. If they make the texturing less ugly I'll be all over it. I think Parkitect is also emphasizing the strategy/management side, which I like more than decorating.

The art is pretty ugly but it grows on you a little. It's pretty close to the original games, at least as far as the rides and peeps go, the only thing that makes it look worse is that the grittiness from the miniscule resolution is gone. Once you get over that it's not too bad.
Plus it's aping a game from 1999, I don't think their target demo is concerned with graphics compared to just getting the simulation and business management side of it done right.

I will say that RCTW's water tool is pretty nifty. It's a terrible fucking idea to use their particular water tool in a park management sim, but aside from that it's pretty nifty. It's kind of similar to how From Dust does it, and that game did very fun landscape deformation. However, From Dust did not task you to try and fill a pool just to the top while it's surrounded by guests waiting in que, guests who will get washed the fuck away if you overfill.
