look for game benchmarks and figure out from there what you need. the only issue is shit like fallout 4 and witcher 3, where one very minor setting change (beams of light and hair realism) can drop the fps by like 20

>>
>>332781696
You're only supposed to put a small amount of thermal paste on the CPU and then put the cooler on top so it spreads across the top of the processor naturally, he's just dumping shit everywhere and smearing it around.

The days of frying your PC because one thing was in the wrong place are long gone.

The only things that tend to go wrong shorting your motherboard because you didn't use the mounting screws, the PC not turning on first time because you missed one of the power connectors or the incredibly fiddly led/button connectors.

CPUs are the most nervy time, not so much because of the pins (you have to be an idiot and try to force in a CPU to do that nowadays) but because the locking lever makes some motherboards flex in a horrible way.
>>
>>332781790

Even the best thermal paste is a shit conductor compared to metal on metal. The purpose of thermal paste is just to ensure that there's no air gap between the heat spreader and the cooler.

You need to use the smallest possible amount whilst covering the heat spreader or else your cooling will be terrible.
>>
>>332781965
Reduced cooling efficiency, and it might spill over and do bad things.
>>
>>332781965
Probably fine, but it's risky. When you push down on the heatsink it spreads out all over. All you need is a drop.
>>
>>332781965
It's more than just unnecessary, it's retarded. It won't break anything, but it's not going to do shit to help your CPU cooler like it would otherwise.
>>
>>332781965
>would work
That much would probably be detrimental. Thermal compound transfers the heat from the cpu to the heatsink, if there is an assload of it it has more material to go through -> more heat buildup -> hotter cpu -> worse performance.
Secondly, we figured out spreading was stupid a long time ago since it just increases the risk of getting airbubbles which dry out your paste significantly faster then if you had just put a small pea sized drop in the center and smushed it down.
Lastly, jesus christ letting the compound get on the mobo, fucking amateur hour.

>might spill over

Ah, this makes more sense. Thanks.

I kind of skipped having to learn the process of building because years ago the cheap desktop my parents bought me for school broke inside of warrenty, and Dell's incompetent technicians failed so badly at fixing it that I was able to just demand a brand new system. All they had to send me was way better stuff so I just stuck a good GPU in it and never needed to build one from scratch.

Also, the cracking sound.
>>
>>332781392
in a way yes. let me tell you about my first rig experience.

Step zero: actually learn about what these parts are and what they do / how they differ. for example: learn why some motherboards cost 200$ and some cost 60$ and why you want/need particular ones. why an amd cpu at 3.5gz is not the same as an inter cpu at 3.5gz.

Step one: Buy the parts. pcpartpicker is good. some parts may come DoA. especially hard drives. sales vary, most sales are rebates. these are intentionally a pain in the ass to redeem. I will never buy msi again.

Step two: assemble. dont do it over carpet. static shock can fuck this stuff up so grab the case/power supply if its a possibility. parts come with instructions, and theres plenty of tutorials. some advice from me; find an exact build online that meets your requirements and build that unless you want to risk some weird incompatibilities. (not literal ones, but ones like "my power supply doesnt line up to be all screwed in" and "my gpu is too big for this case, etc.")

The real kicker was this. troubleshooting. this doesnt always happen but its a nightmare unless you can avoid it. when you dont get the machine to run or post its crushing. I had a very swell issue with mine that took me weeks to figure out. one of my psu sata power cables was faulty. it fried EVERY DRIVE THAT I TESTED IT WITH AND I HAD NO IDEA. THIS WAS 3 HARD DRIVES AND A DISK DRIVE TOO. INOPERABLE. I had to seek out other people to test this shit with because i dont have a control pc to just test parts with. so yeah, anyone who just spams "lol u shudda built a pc brah" or talks dumb shit about "350 dollar console killa!" is full of shit. you need to want a pc and want to build one and be willing to pay for it. it's not just "a console but better!!!". its its own thing.

On topic:
>Built my pc maybe 4 years ago. First time, flawless, came out great
>Tell friends about it. No one wants to fucking play.
>They legit by 3 xbox's each because because red rings and say it costs too much to get a pc
>Fast forward to now
>4 friends all buy pc's
>First one forgot to get hdd/sdd, dosnt understand why it dosnt work
>Second puts cpu in half way. Barely salvaged it
>Another showed me his new cpu by putting his fingers all over the top of it

They all simultaneously asked me to fix them and say "Man, wish someone told us how much fun pc gaming was!".

So yea, I put a bunch together recently and all anyone wants to do now is play rust.
>>
>>332782553
Lmao, building a pc is like lego, difference being that you can put all kind of stupid lego pieces together without breaking any of the pieces and that you can piece them together however you want
>put a hdd in the ram slots, it's like lego
Oh wait, pc assembly and legos are completely different.
>>
>>332780887
Might actually not want to do this if it is your first time, but I'll tell you anyway.

What I do is find a rough approximation of things I need and sit on it for a month. Watch the websites that track sales and clearances. As soon as something goes on sale I buy it up. If you are patient you can save tons. This is how custom builds get cheap.

The catch is experience. If you don't really know what you want then it would be better to just buy what you need. Once you start to understand everything you will have more flexibility and thus would be at more of an advantage waiting for deals to drop.

One thing to mention.

Some stores offer 'system builder insurance' that'll cover you for fuck ups.

You may even be covered by your household insurance as it can be classed as accidental damage.
>>
>>332783239
Depends on the boards. Some older boards have levers that flex and make disconcerting noises.
>>
I have a pretty great Eternal Socket 1366 Nahelem system, but it has gotten long in the tooth. I actually have a Haswell-E system core (ie 5960X, Rampage V Extreme, 16gb DDR 2666) ready, but I need to decide on a new case in which to build it. I'm thinking Case Labs, the god-emperor of computer cases, but they're pretty fucking expensive so I've been putting it off because they're coming out with a brand new Gemini model in the spring/summer, and if I am going to spend upwards of $300 on case, then it better be worth it.

So yeah, currently gaming on a Core i7 920, 12GB, Rampage II Extreme + AMD 290X and sofar it hasn't failed me, but it is time for an upgrade. GPUs will come later after Polaris launches...maybe.

What's wrong with the i5? Current generation i5s are more than enough for gaming without any bottlenecking from even the most top of the line cards. You'd even have enough power left over for streaming if overclocked.
>>
>>332784407
Not that anon but their boards tend to come with a lot of bloatware. I should know. I'm running one.
Also it came with a bugged USB 3.0 port that locks my computer up the second I plug anything into it.
I'm just one opinion though. I haven't really looked into what everyone else has to say about them.
I'll probably replace this board once my next paycheck comes in and I stop being lazy.

Wonder if there's a bios update? It's a strange problem. Don't suppose you duel boot. That would be one way to see if it's on the OS side of things or not.

I've found in the past 3.0 can be a pain in the ass because it isn't natively supported. Even running Windows on a Mac is a chore because the port is disabled entirely without driver support. On my PC it was disabled by default and I had to enable it.

Wish I was there, this stuff is fun to troubleshoot.

I can see a case there for ps3 emulation but even some older generation i3s have been able to run emulators like Dolphin just fine for years now. And in the advent of dx12, optimization for emulation has made leaps and bounds in performance.

Not going to happen for 5 years or more, if ever.

My experience with an asrock has been alright. Biggest issue is that one of the two ethernet ports in the back io panel doesn't seem to work, but it's enough of a non-issue where I can easily ignore it. Other than that it's done its job, and the motherboard tuning app has a fancy gui that I've come to like.

I don't know, RPCS3 had been making rapid progress. Granted only a few games run at full speed but those are just the stepping stones towards improving it's accuracy; from there optimization. I'll give it 2 years.

Funny because for me it's the USB 3.0 on the back panel that doesn't work.

Have had one for years thanks to an older techgeek brother and dad. We all game on PCs primarily.
But I know some of my parts are getting kinda dated so I should save up and swap them out.

Basically cutting edge stuff, yea. Point being, i5 is fine for a gaming box.
