I'm learning how to use Game Maker. It's easy as fuck taking into account that I have made my own engine before.

I'm making a top down action-adventure game. Don't know if to make the city fully explorable or just make it as a menu where you choose location

make it a menu first and then if you don't like it later make the exploration based city
>>
>>332684804
it's "disarray"

also it's customary to keep the save point and the boss itself on different screens/rooms, makes it less visually obvious the guy's just standing there where you flip through your menus and heal up

Thanks, I though of that, making the menu then the map if I have time.

The problem would be making NPC to make the city not feel dead.

To sum up, I will try to make a "No More Heroes 2" approach of the city, and then if I can, a fully explorable one, but that would be a load of work so I don't think I'll be able to do.

I'm currently alone in this project

Just started learning GameMaker after realizing Unity wouldn't get me a 2d pixel platformer that was everything I wanted. It sucks because I have all my scripts in unity, but at least I can recreate the logic in GML

Is there any downside to using Drag and Drop aspects in my game?
>>
>>332685286
>it's disarray

Thanks, fixed it

Also, the place where you fight him has a save point in every room because it's a room-by-room gauntlet of enemies, so it's no less unassuming in context

Anon who drew this: are you still hanging in there? You didn't give up, did you?
>>
>>332687508
You can have code in objects. I write code in objects that detail how it works. Scripts are stuff that tell objects what to do.
>>
>>332684804

It be nice if dialogue has some kind of portrait or at least display the name of the boss when he's talking during his little intro speech
>>
>>332687134
You can get "pixel perfect" stuff in Unity. Round the display position (may want to keep that separate from the physics position) to nearest integer. Render the scene to a small framebuffer that gets scaled up with nearest neighbour to be displayed.

At that point you're using fairly little of the features Unity offers, but it'll certainly work. Jumping to a more limited engine with poorer cross-platform support is not a great move.

I want to make a VN about hunting witches and solving murders similar to Phoenix Wright/Dangan Ronpa, but I have no ideas on core gameplay that would be significantly different from either of them.

I was thinking that maybe the killer/clues change depending on your choices or something, and that maybe you can "mess up" on cases, but that shit was infuriating in LA Noire.

That's how I do stuff in GameMaker. Like the object has an (x,y) target position that it will move itself towards, and you have a script like move_object_to(obj, x, y) which sets those variables, causing the object to move to that position.

think about basic stuff like where the character is born, what's his upbringing and then imagine what traits someone like that would have. For example a kid is born in a ghetto with no father so he's obviously a crack dealing black guy with a torn tank-top and old jeans that are way too big for him.

Okay, but how do I make them unique?

Example:
My main antagonist is a man who went mad because of his jealousy and thirst for revenge. I want him to be a force of nature type antagonist, he's supposed to represent materialism, envy and anger. He goes from stealing knights' weapons to eating whole stars in his way to gain power. The climax of his arc is when player defeats him and he understands that he won't get any stronger.

The problem starts when I have to write some dialogue for him. The game has to be campy and exaggarated as fuck, but I don't want this particular character to be cringy. Also design is a hard part, I wanted to give him shiny silver look with some neon parts, something like Tron or pic related, don't bully please

Also don't bully, it's my first game with story ever

I know it can seem daunting at first, but once you understand this stuff making music becomes so much easier and more fun.

Basically, your song can be in a "key", which just means in which scale the song is. Take for example C Major (as seen in photo.). Each note in the scale is represented by a roman numeral. Lasrge number means major and small number means minor.

So if your song is in the key of C, and you want to do the progression vi - IV - V like i mentioned earlier, you would do Am- Fmaj, Gmaj.

>>
>>332695096
For the chord part, when your starting out yes, try to just play the chord (so C maj would be C + E + G), but for the melody you can play anything in the scale and it SHOULD sound good (I say should because sometimes what you play wont be good, not because the notes don't fit but just because. Thats the hard part in making music)

That kind of looks like the Scribblenauts guy.

how does one make a game soundtrack without any actual instruments (i. e. using only a computer and some software)? And what software would be good?

Just go get yourself a copy of FL Studio, fruity edition for $99. Or, if you don't want to burn a shitload of time making music when you could be writing games instead, use free game music (Google for it) or hire somebody cheap instead.

LMMS and soundfonts, bruv.

The Wacom will just let you make cleaner lines and art online, so you don't have to deal with scanning. Plus everything you draw, in theory, can be a vector automatically.

If you were going to scan to import, you would most likely trace in photoshop anyway, so this just saves a step

i only play other video games anymore for inspiration

$99 is completely out of my reach right now. Hiring someone is a nice idea, but I have no way to pay anyone, and my friends are busy with their lives. Thanks for advice though!

LMMS seems quite interesting. Thanks!

That's what Kickstarter is for.

how is it compared to FL Studio 12?

Right now I'm debating whether the game should have pixelart or full 2d hq graphics.

I wouldn't know, never used FL. I know you can open FL project files with it, so... i'm guessing at the very least it supports everything that FL does?

I have a feeling that if you ever release this, by that time you'll be so tired of that blackness you'll change the whole color scheme to something more conventional.

Kek. Ive thought that myself quite a few times.

I'm going to try to counter the black with the sandy area (which will be much shinier/brighter, this webm was just a start) and slowly introduce light in different ways in a few other areas. I'm hoping that it will make it more bearable, as I'm kind of getting tired of the black after a few hundred hours now.

mostly fighting games, but trackmania canyon is eating my time too (it's worse because I'm making tracks there instead of working on things for my game, blah)

>>332697782
you can just use code
every single code block maps 1:1 with a function anyway

>mfw i had a game basically ready and done on my old computer aside from final graphics
>when i switched computers it somehow got lost

I mean, it's SOMEWHERE in one of the many backup discs and dvds but i'll be damned if i can find it.
maybe instead of working on a game i should make a software that lets you find a single file inside hundreds of external media.
