I just finished playing first Neptunia, after it lied in my backlog since summer and while gameplay was boring and grindy, story was funny and I really liked it, actualyl smiling during gameplay since long time.
Are the other games in series as funny as well? I heard stories about second game, "Sister generation" being downer, edgy and sad, so Im a bit worried.
Of course, I would wait until sale, like usual, but I want to plan ahead.
second game is not as upbeat as the first one but it has my nepdear as the protagonist. it's still enjoyable imo

Up to you. It's pretty much more of the same. They all use the same system and have the same stages. Only difference is story and a few characters. Only the conquest end in Rebirth 2 will make you feel sad. Still worth a playthrough once.
On a side note, try your best to unlock the Symbol Attack Gain Plan asap in Rebirth 2 and 3. It'll make grinding a breeze.

Only until you unlock the Symbol Attack Gain Plan. Once you get that plan, everything that you can normally kill instantly by doing attacks outside battle will now give you the full exp, money, items and count for quests as if you beaten them inside a battle. Grinding is effortless and fast with that plan.
Just look up which route and ending you should go for to get access to that plan. Best to get it on your first playthrough.
I'm in the midst of playing U at the moment, what is everyone's opinion on that, so far I'm really enjoying it. Only thing I dislike is the ripping of clothes but other than that Its fun.

if you view 3 events during the game, you get into the sword route. there's a good sword and a bad sword route. the good sword route is kind of like the true route condensed
if you don't view the 3 events, you get on the standard route. the ending you get then depends on lily ranks and maybe something else i can't remember. there's like 5 variations or so but they're not that different

As long as you don't get a specific ending, it's quite upbeat. Max out your Lily Ranks with Nepgear (best girl alongside Big Falcom and Marvy) and you will be a-okay. In fact, maxing out her Lily Ranks actually transforms the bad ending into a pretty good ending. Specifically, it turns the Conquest ending into the Holy Sword ending. Make sure to use Disc Creation with the Lily Rank speed increase.
Play all the non-spinoff games. They all pretty much improve on each other. The newest one that has yet to come to PC is actually really good and is SIGNIFICANTLY better than the rest of the games.

Oh, yes, Nep U is pretty bland. It's essentially an off-label Senran Kagura, which is not to say that SK is bad, but Nep U is not that great. It even declares itself non-canon.
Anyway, no, something you need to understand is that Re;Birth 1 actually takes place in a universe wholly separate from the rest of the games. Re;Birth 2, 3, and VII all take place in what is called the Hyperdimension or dimensions directly adjacent to it, while the first game takes place in, well, another dimension that has nothing to do with the rest of the games. Arfoire does appear again, but as a completely different person.
If a lot of the random characters popping up in RB1 confused you, like MAGES. or Broccoli and so on, then playing the rest of the games will make it all make sense, because a lot of those characters actually appeared AFTER the ORIGINAL first game. Remember that the Re;Births are remakes. It's all very confusing.

The dialogue is mostly on the same level of quality. Don't worry about it.
Just make sure you use the dub specifically because Nepgear's voice actress is absolutely wonderful.

Also got confused from simply checking out list of possible endings (without spoilers, just requirements and name) and got a bit confused from "True Ending" and "Holy Sword Ending" being separate.

I believe the true ending just overrides your attempts to go on the Holy Sword/Conquest ending if you fulfill the requirements.
So, primarily, you need everyone to have >15% shares in order to go for the True route. If you don't, but do still fulfill the Conquest/Holy Sword requirements, then you'll go on that route.

I'm speedwatching the ending right now so I'm probably wrong.You know how the sword is powered on shares or something on that level? This time, rather than take the other CPU shares by force, Nepgear beats the shit out of one of the CPUs, but she realizes how shitty it is to kill your friends. She convinces the CPUs and Candidates to lend their shares to her. It essentially plays out like the conquest ending where Nepgear uses the holy sword to take out the big bad, but nobody dies this time.
