7th level: bear has 15 THAC0 and 3 APR but only 32 HP and the same resists as the wolf and snake. They all immediately go poof if you stop dancing AND you can't even send them outside of your shaman visual range so enjoy being rooted to the ground at the middle of the battlefield
You are much better off using a Totemic Druid, especially since they get poison, fear, LEVEL DRAIN, hold on hit depending on the summon, not to mention a buttload of immunities including normal weapons at level 10.
Also can be sent outside your visual range to help the tank while you stay safe. Druids also reach level 5 spells at BG1 and benefit from the wis bonus so you can end up with a ton of spells due to 21 WIS

But it really isn't. Low level AD&D is watching a party miss swings/shots, cast 1 spell and kite a black bear around trees. Not to say that it gets much better later but it's miles from a PnP session. You can't tell the game that you want to cripple that enemy, no, all you get is a basic fucking melee attack. Not really since you're rooted to the ground, the lower summons have the shittiest stats possible, can't even send them away from your LOS with another party member.
I mean, those higher tier elementals actually have neat stats but the cons are too many
Meanwhile Totemic Druid has OP as fuck summons that can take you from BG1 to ToB to the point they can literally tank the entire BG2 vampire lair and hit as +6 fucking weapons as soon as level 10, not to mention having poison, hold, LEVEL DRAIN, literally immune to 95% of status ailments
