http://www.pcgamesn.com/ruse/ruse-has-been-pulled-from-steam-and-its-website-deleted-due-to-licensing-issues

So far people who have already purchased it can still play it, but the developer says they have no idea if this will last.
Basically there is a big risk that a game you may have paid money for will be taken away from you because of some 80 year old tank's licensing rights.

There is a reason consoles aren't backwards compatible, it's not because it isn't possible. It's because of licensing.

The PC version of GTA regularly has a song patched out of the game by the latest update, because the license is over.
The console version suffers no such issue. Yet. If the trend continues and offline consoles become rare, I imagine we will join you in the cuckshed.

17 songs were removed from San Andreas.
10 songs were removed from Vice City.

You can just google it, plenty of articles.

As shitty as it is, at least we can mod it back in in a matter of minutes. Besides I have the PS2 disc, an iso for emu and the PC version. The problem will be once they start removing shit from online games because then it will get a lot harder to mod stuff back in.

It's not different then setting parental controls. Games (especially now) all release with what rating they are as a code instead of just an image. You can block movies/games based on their age rating from launching on a certain account.

It would be no different blocking a license from launching on the entire system with an update.

Rockstar had no legal obligation to remove songs from copies already sold. That's why in case of Vice City only new purchases were stripped off songs.
That's also why you can redownload games from Steam, even after their licences expire, and are no longer avaliable in steam shop.
>>
>>332658430
Consoles have the ability to block discs based on age rating, serial code, invalid signature or checksum etc so they could block the game completely if they wanted to.

Consoles will not launch the game if you don't update your system to the minimum OS version for the game.

Console games (increasigly) have online check DRM for first launch/launches.

Consoles auto update games.

If a developer wanted to they could block anything they wanted.

Short of having a disc version of a game that doesn't need an OS update, and running the console in completely offline state each time you launch it you will have to update the game. This is all while you have the option of buying on disc which will likely not be around next gen.

Perfect example is LBP for PS3, if you wanted the removed song in the first patch to stay you would have to buy the disc version and play it offline forever and turn off auto patching in PS3 settings. With the digital download version you NEVER have any option and will always be given the most recent version at the time.

Hence why having the option to mod/patch back an older version on PC is a good thing

Actually no, you don't own the software the console is run on, and you don't own the software the game itself is, you own some pieces of plastic and light metals.

Read your ToA with the console. Tampering with files to let your console play the game again, or modifying the codes in the game actually goes against the ToA. They also state the company reserves the right to make the game stop working at any time they want.

Been like that since at least 6th gen. It's just no one bothers to read the ToA that pops up when you first launch the system, or the manuals that come with your games.

If you mod your game and/or console they can ban AND brick your console entirely legally.

>can't play anymore games
There are games on ps2/ps3/ps4/psp/psvita/360/xbone that have the update on the disk for newer titles. This update can be a full system update and will prevent your game from launching.

So essentially you have to own 2 or more consoles depending on the patch to play the games you want.

I was looking to buy it last month because I am terrible bored. Couldn't find it anywhere.

Assuming you have a disc and don't mind never being able to play online then you have two options, play the disc version totally unpatched (which isn't always possible), or play the latest version. So if patch 1,2,3 add something good and fix gamebreaking bugs, and I buy the game when shitty evil patch 4 comes out or my game autoupdates (which you can't turn off with this gen) to it, I can either a) go back to the totally unpatched game or b) take shitty patch 4

>system reads the license to make sure its a legal copy
>launches game
>version 2.0 of firmware hits console
>game license is expired/company doesn't want the game operating anymore, so on and so on
>game no longer launches

Also PsP had system firmware updates install on the disks, Since a lot of users did not have wifi access. These updates would patch the operating system to improve some games.

You could prevent games launching by their license code.

Why do you think you can't just make a copy of an ISO and get the game to launch, The license code is separate.

I get that you think it isn't possible, but it very much is, and is as simple as flipping on parental controls.

Only if you had it installed on the day it was removed. If it wasnt installed, you couldnt download it anymore. It is removed from the library.

Cool perfect world. You're going to have to disable your WiFi every time you want to play the game, then endlessly pause the auto update which you can't turn off, delete it if it ever finishes downloading (which makes you reinstall the entire game). Over and over again. And if you ever want to compromise and play with any patch while not downloading the one that removes content you can't. Any attempt at modifying it is then punishable by a bricking legally.
