You could never really hold them down constantly anyways. Holding them down only really worked on lower level mobs. Equal or higher required more input, giving the sense that the hold down approach was in there as an auto battle stand in for skipping weaker mobs.
Just holding down defend drained resources with every damage avoidance, and you couldn't hold it down and attack, and you couldn't interrupt animations/attacks to go into defense mode quickly. There were even examples of attacks that the defense button wouldn't work on, so you had to actively avoid those attacks instead, which suggests such abilities will be more prevalent as you enter increased difficulty areas.
It's nice that they changed it to not be a hold down, but it was never as bad as people made out.

I can't think of a single game more important to a company that FF7R to Squeenix. This has always been the trump card in their back pocket, the "break glass in case of emergency" game. If it somehow flops, it would be a deathblow.
