Streamers don't start making money until they're in the multiple thousands of concurrent viewers, and even then they don't make that much.
But even if you are a streamer who can pull a ton of viewers, what happens when your popularity dies? You just spent 5 years learning no useful skills and now you're back to square one.

If you are starting out without the first two it are going to take you a couple years to build up viewership. Then you need to stream somewhat daily to hold on to your viewers and maintain a youtube channel to attract ever more viewers. Even then, lets say your channel averages 3k+ viewers with a decent amount of subscribers and have a youtube channel with 100k subs you might be able to just get by generous donations.

Awesome megaman X speedrunner also has a lot of variety FF6/7 Mario RPG thursdays he does MMX1-6 back to back and RPGs on sunday. A bit over the top with his donations and subs but he's a pretty chill guy and is really interactive with his chat and talks about his strats a lot when chat asks. He manages to not come off as forced even if he has this roided up ginger thing going on.
Other channel I've subbed to for awhile is outerheaven for anyone not familiar they only stream Metal Gear games and have 3 different streamers. Knight does not stream as much but he's pretty cool really a middle ground between the other two streamers, drk29 whines a lot and never stops bitching anytime he plays TPP but still fun to watch. Threedogg is the best streamer on there his in depth story runs are ridiculous and he really like to go in great depth analyzing the game and showing optional easter eggs and codec calls.

Gimmicky flavor of the month streamers are pretty bad usually too. Coming from someone who mostly follows speedrunners I stopped watching so many streamers because all they play is fucking mario maker. iateyourpie/trihex/mitchflowerpower stopped streaming their respective games mario rpg/yoshi's island 2/SMB3 (Mitch started up again finally on SMB3). Trihex just rides his previously established popularity and talks endlessly between some mario maker while being whipped to his girlfriend who is trying to ride his coat tails.

They play what they want to play and don't hop on new games all the time. That is the worst shit and makes it impossible for me to enjoy watching someone when they're playing a new fucking game every other day. Even worse when they play garbage like h1z1 or day z in between other games.

game streaming has basically passed it's prime. Twitch has way way too long of a delay for streams, it's like 10 seconds, even with the "remove delay" option. 10 seconds where people have to wait for a fucking response is enormous. Imagine having to wait 10 seconds to reply to someone who said hello to you. Un-ac-fucking-ceptable.
Youtube's only slightly better. less delay but the chat is awful, it stops scrolling once you get more than like 5 people in the chat and you constantly have to refresh the page because the chat has a memleak.
Greenscreen/facecams are a super important part of streaming. If you don't want them, go watch youtube videos because it's the same exact thing. the only reason people watch streams are because they're live and you can interact with the streamer. Interacting with some disembodied voice is fucking gay and it's why nobody who refuses to cam gets popular, unless they were grandfathered in to it.

Late Night with Cry and Russ are pretty good. They're pretty much the opposite of everything cancerous on Twitch, no facecam, no overlays, just friends hanging out playing video games until early in the morning.
La_Li_Lu_Le_Lo aka Souix is great for chilling. The guy sounds almost identical to Solid Snake and he just plays video games and reads chat.
I stream purely for fun.. a few of my friends watch including my girlfriend and everyone says they think the stream will get big one day.. but i don't even know if I want that to happen, or if it will. Seems that you have to have some crazy over the top personality to grow now, but thats just not me man
