Even the fucking patching utility needed a patch, what a fucking mess this whole game was. Sierra deliberately shipped an unfinished product, and quickly firing the developers sure didn't help.

this happens a lot in unreal engine games. if they change something that's in one of it's big bricks of compressed data it has to download the entire modified file and write over it, no matter how little it's changed. This is what presumably has happened in your case at least
