Valkyria Chronicles is an interesting example, because unlike Darkest Dungeon or XCOM, all of the characters have completely unique designs and voices. You can actually completely run out of characters to recruit and end up fucked.

I think /v/ shits on it for being medium tier (and maybe rightfully so) but I still recommend it if you enjoy turn based isometrics. And in terms of party members: charisma effects who you can recruit, and when they die, they just die. No big fancy cut scene, no wrap up speech - just a mutie rocket to the anus and splat - they're gone.combat meta is gimped tho
