Try the Initial D series. There's one on PSP for you to emulate if you don't have a PS3.

I've never played Sonic Rival's so I can't really comment.
and despite >>332471705, I still find the game incredibly fun, albeit I'm a bit biased since I played that a ton as a kid.
Although I still wouldn't say it's as bad as he described.
It's a bit wonky, but still fun to play through. It's pretty short and easy, so it's not like you'll spend forever trying to get through it if you don't like it.

There will never be a redline racing game

Initial D feels fast as fuck despite being on a smaller "scale" than F-Zero and the like.

>>332479515
>You could just like..buy a game you want and only use the library feature?
Not that I'm aware of. Steam's running in the background, tracking what games are launched, played how long. It has privacy settings I'd have to turn down first and re-check periodically. It's as if I got a gamestop dude sitting next to me while I'm playing, taking notes. I'd rather just buy the game and then have nothing to do with them any longer.

In the case of sonic, I even remember looking at a physical copy, to hopefully bypass steam. Seems to be hardwired into it though, which sucks.

You sound like an old man that doesn't understand computers is what's up, dude. It's not like Steam is actively trying to harvest your organs and sell you pre-orders unless you visit the store-page (protip, all store pages for anything ever do this). As for privacy settings, if you have nobody as a friend then what's to check? Nobody will give a shit about a random with no profile or picture amongst the ocean of them.

NFS used to be its own distinct series. Around NFSU EA was hellbent on following fads. It has lost its own direction ever since, chasing ricer style, gangster, amateur GT racing and burnout in various ways.

You don't know the "purpose" of NFS, rest assured. Not that I do either, I haven't played very many NFS games or racers in general. So whatever I'll grant you that EA sucks and as far as I'm concerned all modern games are categorically bad.

>>
>>332492805
>That doesn't prohibit the possibility of some people finding the overall experience of playing the game to be fast and intense
It does not, but it does not make the games good representatives, or templates, for high intensity racing.

>Lol, no
So now you tell me what "quality" NFS brought to the table, or how it impacts games like wipEout, Rollcage or F-Zero, you know, high speed high intensity racing.
Let's make it easier, tell me what "quality" NFS brought to the genres it later imitated, like closed circuit amateur racing? Gran Turismo and Grid kind of stormed ahead on both.
What is it? The physics models? The licenses? The meshes? The textures? The sounds? None of it. It's a meaningless phrase, because there's no consistency across these games that makes a term of vapor-y as "quality" applicable across the board.

What I've been trying to say is that, that's not necessarily true.

Like I said I'm no racing game expert by any means, so I won't presume to sit here and tell you in fine detail what separates NFS as a franchise from its racing-game peers and other racing franchises. But if you look at NFS:MW for example, objectively it is a solid game all around. It's the full package, it really stands out. Any game in any genre, especially nowadays, would do well to try to imitate that level of overall scope/execution of game design.

So no I don't think it's fairly unremarkable or mediocre or whatever you said before.
