If for nothing else this needs to be fucking applauded for being the only game in history to almost completely live up to the hype. The only thing they compromised with is the graphics, but they're so well optimized and look so good that you can't even argue that. It's a masterpiece.

The too much content is a poor write-up of a legit complaint, which is that most of the fucking content is entirely meaningless busywork, like looting random ass money chests in Assassins creed. And the game does have too much of that, too many drawn out random encounters, too many "follow the breadcrumb trail" bullshit, clearing out area's of monsters is mostly a waste of fucking time and is blatant padding, etc.

I like wandering around the countryside and seeing the sights but when it comes to treasure hunting quests or just collection of markers around the map I just fall asleep. Particularly in the case of Skellige's numerous water collectibles. There's really no point to it and it really highlights the problem with how pretty much every weapon in the game is just a stat stick with no unique moveset.
Most of the witcher contracts, main quests and other side quests were good but not great. You'd think there would be more decision making involved but only a handful of choices affect the ultimate ending and a few slides to wrap the whole thing up so it was only slightly less offensive than Mass Effect 3s ending.
Oh and of course the combat is terrible.

I think the main reason Witcher 3 is so hated is the same reason Bloodborne is (not including the obvious exclusivity of Bloodborne) and maybe even the same reason Arkham/Mass Effect games used to be hated as well.
The fanbase simply overblows how good their game is. They class it as masterpieces when they are anything but and are simply well made games that achieved what they set out to achieve.
Arkham Asylum/City gave us the quintessential batman experience and was a fantastic game(s) to boot.
Mass Effect gave us a truly unique Space RPG admist the countless Tolkien based Fantasy RPGs
Witcher 1, 2 and 3 gave us a faithful adaption of the book series that many love for the world/characters.
These faithful and well made games came at a time of mediocrity which in turn makes it seem better than they actually were (which was pretty "great")
