Taking the mystery and magic out of dragons is what makes them lame. They're supposed to defy reason and be powerful beings, not just some species of flying reptile. 6 limbs is part of that reason defying mystery, as is being massive in size and still capable of flight.

There are written accounts of dragons being described in the same way that there are written accounts of the description of wyverns and other mythological beings. He's not supposed to be some kind of natural occuring animal but rather a manifestation of someones soul, A kind of "Idea" of that persons Spirit, like a god, something that was shaped and formed to represent an Idea rather than a specific being.

But yeah, generally I prefer the "2 feet and wings" creatures, as in our animal kingdom no single animal has 4 feet and wings.
