3 is probably the peak, but 1 will always have a place in my heart.
2 was where they tried something new and it worked.
CTR was what no one expected to work but it just kinda' did.
Bash was a huge fuckup which came about after the cockiness of CTR.
Wrath of Cortex was alright, but the loading screens were terrible and the charm was gone. They were right to end it.

Not a lot of competition there.
IIRC CTR was the last game in the franchise Naughty Dog worked on, before Eurocom worked on Crash Bash and Traveller's Tales worked on Wrath of Cortex. CTR still really holds up as a racing game. As far as the platformers go I think 2 is the best for sheer improvement and consistency in level design, and would tie with CTR for me as the second-best Crash game. 3 has some of the better platforming levels, but the new mechanics really bog it down and I'm completely not enamoured with the relic system whatsoever. It fits a lot better in CTR and would fit a lot better in Crash 1 or 2.

Wrath wasn't bad, it was just soulless. The charm was gone, and the loading screens raped it apart.
The levels themselves were slow and stiff and they somehow never managed to live up to what we were expecting from a Crash game.

Played the Crash trilogy on my Vita. Every time I loaded up this level, the game would freeze and stop working. Not in the same place in the level itself, but the level would consistently stop the game.

Crash 1 is the purest and therefore the best, it didn't have any retarded minigames (apart from the pig sections but they were really short) to dilute the platforming goodness.
Crash 2 would have been the best if not for the jetpack bullshit
Crash 3 would have been the best if not for the bike racing, underwater levels and aeroplane sections

See I didn't mind it but watching a speed run of it really put into perspective how bad it is. It is worse from a technical and graphical standpoint than the PS1 games and that is astounding to think about, the enemy designs are laughable not to mention their behaviours lack any sort of aggression (oh no look out he threw a spear at you once) with the threat to Crash particularly disproportionate (a small fish blowing up a fucking sub really?) and the Coco levels just being a nerfed version of Crash's with her moves being downright useless. The bosses being relegated to stage hazards pissed me off but I guess they had to showcase the new villain. There are very few even remote glimpses of effort (barely any death animations at all) and it altogether feels like a really half-arsed effort to cobble together a Crash 3 clone for familairity's sake (which it was because they ran out of time and cut it down from an open world game).
It's playable but you can do a lot better. The GBA games are good because the format translates well to it. Only good idea WoC had was the Atlasphere.
