In any case, I've played it (thanks review copies) and it's quite fun. It's about 30 hours long and pretty easy, but the plot is fun to follow and using the Servans in battle is the best part.

I really like how their relationship is so important in this one. I usually like Gust games but I didn't expect Nights of Azure to be as good as it is.
It's got some combat slowdowns but they're not terrible. There's some clipping, but not a big deal. The OST is very nice, combat is fast, and the plot + relationship thing is interesting. Also raising stats like a raising sim and pumping them into skills.

Controlling Arnice herself is really button-mashy, but weapon swapping keeps using her kind of interesting. You get more weapons as you level up. The best part of combat is using Servan Bursts, which is more fun than it sounds. Game is easy, though.

Yeah, sometimes when this happens game 2 can really be something special, even when starting from a far worse base then this one is. Think of ZoE 1 vs ZoE TSR, or Dark Cloud 1 vs Dark Cloud 2. Or hell, on a lesser level even Neptunia. Argue all you want about whether even the recent ones are "good" or not, but objectively they're definitely insanely massively /better/ then the first one, which had some small spark to it but was pretty mediocre overall. If even shit like that can hugely improve then then maybe this could become an interesting franchise.

You summon them outside of the field using fetishes like dolls, bones, bombs, etc. These are often dungeon drops but can also be obtained via quests.
In combat, you summon Servans at will but can't unsummon them unless you switch your party (something you unlock not too far into the game).

Given all the magic and alchemy in a lot of these games I'm honestly kind of surprised they have just gone the route of yuri-then-they-have-magic-babies yet. You're right they have a variety of relationships, but yuri is clearly part of that.
