I also don't like pop-culture references, by which I mean anything referencing real life or the internet is right out. Other works are okay, but only in certain circumstances. Some mediums are more okay than others, for example TV is pretty shit in general and makes for piss poor references in most cases. I prefer references to be more subtle, and not shoved in my face during cutscenes or dialogue.
References aren't a stand-in for comedy, and anyone using them as such should be taken out back and euthanized.
I'm sure I could write a "Van Dine's 20 rules" style document for this shit, but that's entirely too much effort for something so meaningless that will never be used by anyone anyway, and I'm by no means any kind of expert on the subject to begin with.
