Anybody else keep a notepad handy while they play video games?

I draw maps, scribble clues, or write down things worth checking out later since I usually end up forgetting stuff like that as the game goes on.

When I'm playing early survival horror games I'll save, go through the next part with no regard to personal safety, write down where everything is/what to do and then reload my save and do it flawlessly with no damage
>>
You should play La Mulana.

Any game that requires the player to write shit down separately is failing at game design. Everything should be easily referenced within the game through maps/memo screens/etc.
>>
>>332336145
No, I don't think anything would break immersion like this would. Especially in survival horror. I think you might be alone in this one.
>>
>>332336542

But the characters in Silent Hill make notes all over their maps, how is this any different?
>>
No, because I have a functioning brain
>>
Most games no, but...

>La Mulana

Yep. Very much the 'figure it out yourself' sort of game by design.
>>
Maybe for a puzzle game like Myst. Because there's no way in hell i could remember everything.
Other than that no.
>>
only if the game doesn't provide me with a map, or is overly complicated. I wrote shit down while playing Pathologic.
>>
I used to until I got a 2nd monitor.
>>
>>332336145
Notepad was very useful for lockpicking in gothic.

this OP

I just use a word doc. I'll sometimes use paint if I'm really struggling with something visual.

I'm too lazy to Google, is it fun?
>>
>>332336145
You're not alone, but I use a quill and parchment when I'm playing fantasy RPGs otherwise it breaks immersion
>>
>>332336145
For some older adventure, crpg, and Dungeon Crawlers it definitely is going to help, but with modern games it's pretty unecessary
>>
You seem autistic.

I do it too, I'm a slave to my perfectionist compulsions. I'm the cancer that is killing the gaming industry.
>>
>>332338009

I don't think I've needed a pen and paper for any game released past 2010.

Games today don't have secrets to keep track of or any sort of worthwhile backtracking.
>>
>>332336454
There is nothing inherently wrong with designing a game to be played with physical note, some old Dungeon Crawlers definitely encourage the player to draw their own maps with graph paper and I for one find that pretty damn immersive and fun
>>
>>332338282

Not gonna lie, I used graph paper to draw dungeon maps in the original LoZ.

>every patch or dlc installment in GTAO resets the gameplay settings.
>Have to use slider settings that i took note in a notebook, because slider settings don't have numbers.
>consult the notebook after every reset or installment.

Yes, but I do it to wrote up reviews

that post with that image made me laugh for some reason
>>
>>332336145
I used to until like 10 years ago. Now there's really no need.

>you will never play play Myst games again for the first time

Now that I think about it, something like Secret World could probably benefit from keeping notes on the side for investigation missions.
>>
>>332336145

Yes, in Nethack I usually make a record on what my intrisics I have, what DLs had vaults, altars or anything I should come back later for. So far it is the only game I played. I actually like taking notes. I feel like such a pro.

>mfw you had to manually draw maps in older RPGs

Automating that step was seriously one of the greatest advancements ever made in the genre. Keep in mind this was still during the days of labyrinthine level mazes.
>>
>>332336145
>implying kids these days don't immediately run to Google if they're stuck on something for more than 30 seconds
>>
Also on FIFA manager mode I have to use a notepad to keep track of my players, the positions they can play, which players need training in which area, which of my youth squad to keep an eye on etc.

Technically the details are all there but it's a hassle scrolling through all the menus
>>
>>332336145
I'm deaf and communicate by writing so I always have a notepad handy

Dedicated? No just autism. This word lost meaning to me since it gets thrown around like this.

You like a game not for casuals? Autism.
You 100%ed a game? Autism.
You breathe? Autism.

This post is autism.

For Oblivion I used to plan skilling.
I actually wrote down what to level and where to put how many points in to get dat max stat raise.
Still the worst leveling system ever.

I do when it's absolutely necessary.

Otherwise, i like to keep things in my head, and i don't care about fucking up.
>>
>>332340085
sorta wanna say yes but realistically I'm pretty average
>>
Depends on the game, really.

Mazes, puzzles or winding caverns? You bet.

Linear corridor shooters? Fuck no.
>>
>>332336145
I just have one for games like la mulana and old dungeon crawlers. Some anon posted an app to draw maps some time ago but I forgot the name.
>>
>>332340358

It's ironic because the fascination /v/ has with autism is actually autistic.
>>
I've been tempted to play Zelda 1 and make my own map.

I'm going to start doing this again to reignite both things I used to do.

Damn nigga, if that's your drawing, you got some skill. Keep it up.
>>
by the end of playing 999 and VLR I had about 10 pages of notes of just solving puzzles and keeping track of codes and junk, the only games I ever needed that for before were the Myst games and Fez for dealing with the translations
