Only friction kept the cartridge in, just like most other top loading cartridge based consoles.
The SNES had a cartridge lock, but the cartridges were changed to remove the ability shortly into the console's life time, probably because the mechanism was cheaply made (and most kids probably bruteforced the cart out of the system anyway by yanking on it yard enough).

Mega Drive, SNES, Dreamcast, TurboGrafx.. The only exception I can remember was the Master System being the same for US/EU and different in Japan.
Brazilian company Tectoy bought the Mega Drive and Master System blueprints from Sega and they still manufactures the consoles with built-in games
