What's the general consensus on this game?
It's good but not as good as Tactics Ogre.
It's fucking awesome
I like it.
There's a pretty big fanbase for it still singing its praises. The story is nice and political and the mechanics are good.
I'd ignore anyone who brings up Tactics Ogre. It's a personal preference as which is better and the general consensus does not think TO is better.

I think I dislike it because, yeah, I'm an FFTfag. It's an over-simplification of an awesome game, and just always felt lacking. There were some cool jobs for sure, but generally, it felt like a step in the wrong direction for the series. I just wanted (and still want) an FFT2.

Best FF game.
FFT is a game I would put in my 3x3. I do fully agree that the game is unbalanced and not that particularly deep in comparison to others of the same genre, but I like the game as much for its presentation and style as anything else.
FFTA is trash because it's a handheld game.
I'd like to try TO, and I'm hoping that the PSP version gets an HD upgrade to at least a console at some point. If it doesn't, oh well.

Yes.
Every single Ogre game has you fight a demon/angel/goddess or something like that. At the end.
job points take forever to grind, some classes are very shitty compared to others. once you start getting special characters they blow your normal ones out of the water. monsters are largely not worth having on your team even though there are so many in the game. the story is probably very good but it's so big that I still don't fully grasp it to this day. some fights have to be cheesed to win if you don't want to grind forever (see >>332315914 )
all that said it's one of my favorite 'tactics' type games. it's really fun to make powerful units and even when you don't read into all the intricacies of the story it's still enjoyable.

TO on PSP butchers the script to Ye Olde pseudo-Shakespearean, while the original SNES version has gamekilling implementation like unit training and having 4x4 spells animate each tile separately.
Being a TO fan is suffering. Play the SNES version first, though, because PSP is much, much easier and a grindfest to boot.

Oh fuck right off with that garbage. Choosing Chaos makes Vyce an insane psychopath all of a sudden, choosing Law makes him a noble good guy. The game has some really dumb shit happen in it and the ending is "Kill the demon king!"

It's a great game on your first playthrough but it steadily gets worse and worse the more times you play through it because while it has a lot of content, it's very poorly balanced and isn't difficult.
Thank fuck it has one of the most active hacking communities.
Final Fantasy Tactics is "difficult" if it's the first turn based strategy game you've ever played, but there are so many game-breakingly broken abilities that you can exploit to make the game super easy if you can figure them out. One of them is given to you right from the get go. If you have two squires, one just spamming Accumulate and the other Yelling at him, you can quickly buff the squire up to getting 5+ turns before the enemy can act once and your squire can likely one-shot them. Once Ramza learns Scream, he can Accumulate/Yell himself with it at the same time. It's the easiest way to break the game.
For the playstation? A masterpiece.
For the PSP? Shit due to the slow down and OC added to the game. I did like the increase in party size though.TO was pretty bad for the psp for a completionist's PoV. The in game save states, RNG, and specific spawns required to complete the game is on par with mmos in terms of bullshit. Playing blind will lead to you missing out on items such as Decoy because you can only get it off a certain enemy that only spawns in story battles. If you reach a certain level with all jobs they'll be completely missable. Archers were OP, and the AI wasn't smart.
The "hard" part of the game is just maps with pits with enemies that can knock you off the map killing you instantly unless your unit can fly.

I've tried playing it twice. I've gotten to the Cuchulainn fight in the PSX version and I've played the PSP version less. I liked the music and, surprisingly enough, the story. The job system seems cool too. I'm interested and I want to like it, but the battles just move too slowly for me, so I've stopped playing both times. I guess tactical RPGs aren't for me, or maybe it's just slow moving ones.

You first notice with Weigraf when he fuses with his Zodiac Stone. As time goes on he cares less and less about his original goal in taking revenge against Ramza until the final battle against him where he's just after Ramza due to having stones.
Meliadoul and Izlude's father didn't care for either one of them and it's proven when Izlude is killed by him.
The Elmdor you save in chapter one isn't the same person in chapter 4.

Just completely wrong. Having to think about your actions isn't slow and outdated. Replacing it with "have everyone use their most powerful attacks at the same time" isn't updating the gameplay. That is removing gameplay.

Gameplay got worse more than it got better. For example, paying mana for weapon skills, the highest of which are limited to specific job classes, made the game worse. It wasn't until D2 that gameplay started going uphill again.
