As for the skits, they are community submitted. The only times team made them were a last ditch filler effort. Director's cut should be "substantially better" in this regard.

I can't recall which was worse, this one or last years when you just had a complete bare bones 'we don't give a fuck' presentation in response to 2013's god awful 'le retro 80s and bastion wins everything' awards.

I think you're mixing up years anon.
Currnet year's (2016) show (2015) was supposed to be the least sterile presentation since 2012 show (that aired in 2013). Bastion "swept" in 2011 show.

As in talked about the candidates for the award more? In some ways that can be done (and was done) through video by trying to reference specific reasons, but no outright narration was ever attempted yet.
This one had the best balance of skits so far, though I preferred the one with the Hotline Miami for aesthetics/music.
