Only real downside that's left is the excessive use of HMs, but even that is only during one section of the game.

First of all, I played Gen 1 and 2 and Diamond before I played Pokémon Platinum and I'm playing it right now again. It's a great game, it's perfect. The Pokémon designs were still good back then, guess I'll never buy a future Pokémon game again, because I don't like their 3D designs of the battles and that weird Mega shit. Heart Gold and Soul Silver were the last good Pokémon games for me.

Battle sequences were slow, story was like meh at best comparatively, surfing was atrocious, you needed an HM slave at all times in order to even progress so you only had a party of 5 at any given time considering that, the map was awful and confusing, it was a mess and had no clear direction and lagged more than gen 6 with 3D activated. It didn't introduce a lot of new Pokémon, a lot of them were evos of previous generations. some were good most were bad. There were a fuck ton of legendary, again some were cool most were meh, my opinion. Some events were lackluster. The redeeming qualities were there like the champion fight and build up but they just didn't shine enough to outweigh (in my opinion) the cons of the game. As an autistic faggot who has played every generation to date I'd like to say 4 was easily the least interesting. It's not to say it's not without good qualities but again it's not enough to make the cons worth playing through. I also didn't like the characters at all, none of them were very good. Dawnfags btfo. My nigga Electivire tho he's top tier and Cynthia is hands tied for best champion right before Red. I think gen 4 just didn't have what's it's previous generations had and thats why they rebooted the series with Black and White.

Defog was really the only one that could really fuck you over. The only time Surf was a pain was when I had Gyardos as my water type, but I only slapped it on for Victory Road and removed immediately after. Cut always goes to useless shit you get early on. Rock Climb, Fly, and Strength aren't bad at all, and again, Waterfall is only a bitch if the Pokemon you give it to majorly favors special moves. That only leaves Rock Smash and Defog as potential problem children.

I don't know how bad you are at Pokémon but you can build full competitive teams with just Gen 5 Pokémon. I wouldn't recommend it, but it's possible.
