Thinking about going with Knight or Herald, or maybe Mercenary.
Going Knight. Dark Souls has a fairly unintuitive system where Knight doesn't have the stats or gear I want to have but it has combined the fewest points put into stats that I definitely won't be using, and therefore will be optimal for the build I end up creating.
Picking a class based on how low the stats you don't want are rather than how high the stats you do want are is stupid. I wish they'd change the class system, I'd almost prefer a point buy system where your class just determines gear instead of stats.

Item droprates in this game are absolutely atrocious and are Korean MMO tier without it. Beat the game, respec into 50 LCK and then farm for everything you want, then respec back.
Rolling Deprived here with a quality build. I love starting with nothing, and having to use what bits of equipment I can find as I go. Quality so I can try out as much as I can my first run. It also typically has the side effect of making things a tad harder and thus, extending the length of the run, so there's that too.

Knight is SL9 with 98 stat points, 25 of which I don't care about.
Thief is SL5 with 94 stat points, 32 of which I don't care about.
Thief has more points in stats I'm ditching and the extra 5 Soul Levels in Knight are fine because they're already effectively in stats I intend to raise further. I have no intention to invest in LCK on my first run sticking to items and possibly gear if I need to boost it. So I'm rolling Knight.

Vitality is the new dump stat as there's nearly no difference between light armor and heavy armor. The game uses Dark 2's approach to armor, unless you're using the heaviest set in the game, you'll likely notice no difference in defense. VIT is only useful for STR players with heavy weapons.

Just about every enemy in the game takes around 2 hits, then goes fully hyper-armor to swing at you. So if you don't kill in those first two hits your going to take a hit or dodge and with how heavy weapons eat stamina half the time you are near dry to roll.
I have found extreme success with a regular old battle axe, it staggers the same, does around the same damage and takes way less stamina and has less recovery frames.
On the bright side heavy weapons aren't an instant win like in the other souls games.

No I meant that as in ENEMIES have hyper armor. You do to but a lot of enemies just flat out ignore your hyper armor on normal swings, weapon arts have true hyper-armor though so you can just eat right through their swing.

My best builds (DeS and DaS respectively) were melee/sorcery builds that fucked up people in pvp. I usually just buffed my weapon or relied on my high INT to amplify my enchanted weapons for big damage without relying too much on spellcasting.
A bow that did magic damage and special arrows and the mother fucking SHOTEL enchanted to do extra damage while I R2 assholes through shield negation.

I had no issues playing PVP/Co-op in DS when I turned on my PS3 last week, and on PC it's still alive and well.

From what I've seen (no firsthand experience, mind you), it does poor damage, but is generally viable and has more fun, flexible spells. The FP system also means that spells that aren't Soul Arrow or Spear are actually usable now. Just don't expect to nuke down bosses in <30 seconds anymore.
