I gravitated towards Raiden and Mileena in MK9, and they were both mid tier.
Hell, before Corrin, my mains were Samus and Zelda, two bottom tier characters. The highest tiered character I would frequent was Robin who barely makes it in mid tier.

The more characters you can play well the better you understand the game in general. If you can play a lot of characters that also means you know what to do when you face them, becoming proficient at many characters is a sign of someone who understands matchups and the game in general.
