Probably because he's usually the most balanced character, on top of the fact that you play as him in nearly all Mario games (obviously). So when you get the chance to play as Toad or Bowser, people go that route to take advantage of speed/power/etc. Not boring, just playing it safe. If you like Mario then go all out. I mained him in Melee for awhile till I switched to Dr. Mario.
