Can I see other examples of the trope? I'm not that other anon, nor am I doubting you, just curious. I thought the idea was that it's so forced that they can't even fake it. That in this case it was a vein attempt until the end when they realize how stupid it was, and they could just talk it off. Cause each of them are having meltdowns with unrelatable situations and thrusted into roles they never had to fulfill, like Yuna being a public image of sanctity and almost a messiah, and Tidus being a pampered athlete turned into the guardian of something more important than a sport.
But if other animes do this on a regular basis, I guess it kinda comes off as a lazy write off.

Tidus' name in Japan is Tida (pronounced Teeda) which apparently means "Sun" in some way, giving his name a connection with Yuna, meaning "Moon". According to his story it sounds like the narrator in Japan basically had to wing it and would have just kept as close to the Japanese sound as possible due to his situation (not knowing the lore and living in Japan). Then everyone just went along with it without a second thought.
But here's the thing. While Tee-dus might be phonetically the most similar to his Japanese name, it doesn't take into consideration the name's origins and what it was supposed to mean. So how do we get that back without totally changing his name? If we pronounce it Tide-us, that gives a pretty clear connection with water, one of the integral elements in the game and something important to Tidus himself. While that already has more of a deeper meaning for him in regards to the game, it still keeps the Yuna connection with how the moon influences the tides, and a less forced one at that. Seriously the Celestial Weapon stuff is the only other instance of it occurring and that seems forced in too.
TL;DR Tide-us makes more sense when you think about it too much, the video story sounds like SE didn't think about it enough.

Now the rest of the scene, which you keep ignoring because you are autistic is played much better in the original, the dialogue flows quicker, and resumes after each character speaks without as much pausing because of the problems with placing English sentences in the same period as the Japanese ones. There is either not enough time to say it all or too much. In addition, the flow from the goofy laugh to the natural one is better in the Japanese version because it doesn't continue to sound forced like it does in English

FFX was made and dubbed before Square began redoing the lip and mouth movements for overseas releases, and it suffered from the usual problems of dubbing like trying to make the English words and sentences fit the mouth movements and the amount of time the sentence takes. Compare Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes, the first had the same problem FFX did and the second had the characters' mouths redone for English which made the flow of conversation smoother and less stilted.

When I was like 16 I actually did the Tidus laugh outdoors with a girl who had never played FFX. I took most of my social skills from characters from JRPGs. It must have worked because we dated for two years after that, which I'd say is a decent length of time for high schoolers.
She thought it was silly and funny and she went from extremely depressed that night to happy and having a good time with me. Even though its been about 4 years since I've had anything resembling meaningful contact with her, I hope to god she never finds out I stole it from a video game.She probably has by now.
