Pyromancy as a playstyle wasn't super OP, but considering it required no investment other than Souls and Attunment meant any class could use End-Game tier magic just by grinding a few hundred thousand souls.
You could min-max your build for melee and still be able to use Ascended Pyromancy Flame to cast Black Flame or other powerful spells.
