Depends on the school. It was a new thing for us my senior year, so while I was allowed to schedule less than a full day of classes, I needed a job or internship or college courses or something like that in order to leave early properly.
If not, like my case, the empty space is filled with commons (junior/senior free period), but my GPA was bad so they replaced it with study hall (fresh/soph) about a semester into the year.
And since I had like four classes, I never had any homework or what little I did have was mostly done during class.
Pretty shitty.
Oh, and part-day students didn't get lunch, even if they couldn't leave like me.

In all my math/engineering courses I basically HAVE to attend, despite attendance being optional, because a) I won't get the difficult material for all the homeworks and exams if I don't go or b) they give pop-quizzes or have you be present to turn in work.
Even with the gay-ass gen eds I have to take they still find a way to make you go, usually by taking attendance or giving a "participation grade" or some other lame excuse to get you to go to some shitty prof's irrelevant, otherwise easy class.
I guess I could start skipping my Intro to OOP course because that shit's pretty easy, but I'd then spend my time doing all the work for other classes so maybe I could sleep before midnight that night.

Back when I was there, we got 3 unexcused absences before we got a verbal warning. Another was a written warning. After that was a final warning and then you got terminated.
Funny thing being that the way sick leave worked was that even if you had sick days available, the first miss was ALWAYS an unexcused absence. So after 3 separate sick incidents, you'd still get written up. What a fucking awful company.
