The issue wasn't giving Samus a voice and character that didn't match headcanons. The issue was making Samus one of the most poorly written, sexist and unlikable characters in recent memory.
She accomplishes nothing in the game, spends most of her time doing emotionless monologues about motherhood and sucking the dick of her estranged father figure, doesn't grow as a person at all between her time as a rookie and the end of the Metroid timeline, and taking orders from other characters because she's incapable of taking out even the most reoccuring enemies in her franchise by herself.
