In Geneforge you are an apprentice member of a wizard group who are kinda like summoners, but they actually create living beings to be used as slaves. After a shipwreck you try to escape the forbidden island you are stranded on, and most of the game is about exploring it to learn what happened. You meet several factions:
serviles (intelligent human-like creatures) who would like to be treated as equals
serviles who want to serve their creators' best interest
serviles who want to wage war on their creators to gain their freedom
the primary villain, a foreigner who wants to learn your secrets conquer your lands
the secondary villain who is a member of the wizard faction but like you is also stranded on the island
and rebel foreigners who betrayed the primary villain and want a peaceful relationship with the wizards
Depending on what you do, the endings go like:The worst ending is helping the secondary villain, basically everyone dies including you in a war. The second worst ending is escaping without doing anything, that also ends in war. You can, if you wish, become a mad god, how successful you turn out to be at that depends on whether you destroy the source of your power. If you do, you can basically rule the world, albeit mad. You can kill the primary villain and leave, in that case there is a war, but not as bad as without killing him. You can kill the primary villain and destroy the power source, in which case there is peace, rebel creatures either hide or are put down, you are given a good position, but you regret it for the rest of your life. If you help the primary villain turn into a god and serve him, there is war, but it's over fast, you get a powerful position in the new empire, creatures are treated well, and it's an all around good thing for everyone but the wizards and the loyal serviles. This is by far the most positive ending in the game. There is no ending where everyone wins, or only the villains lose.

Eh, well, as anon said it depends. The gameplay is rather simple, and if you have a serious aversion against fighting thrash mobs there will be parts you are going to hate. But the game is really damn open, you can finish the whole thing without talking to an NPC or taking a single quest.
